i dont think i could ever ban a heartlander . it shouldnt be a problem. the only thing being that i cant do it now. it being 3am and all here. 5 hours or so and soulseek would be on for me here...Dan wrote:Soulseek, hmmm...ryan_w_0000 wrote:i wouldnt rely on my msn atm
what about soulseek? (and yes its around 40 mb)
{wandering off at a tangent}
A couple of years ago when I was trying to send a file to someone they suggested soulseek. I downloaded it - it was a very primitive looking thing, hopefully it's improved since then (it looked like I was running it in dos!). They got me to type in an ip (which I had to type in every time as the stupid thing didn't seem to save it in settings) to connect to the "depeche hub"(whatever the hell that is) where I was promptly banned for not sharing enough files - the stupid thing didn't give me a chance - i'd only just installed it. To make a long story even longer I then emailed the 10mb file only for it to be returned to me IN FULL because the mailserver didnt accept files that size. I then .rar'ed it into several smaller files which the recipient was unable to combine. I think I sent it over msn in the end. Not a pleasant experience - I was on 56k dialup at the time too.
{/wandering off at a tangent}
I'm reluctant to try soulseek as it was so user unfriendly 2 years ago, unless someone can tell me it's not the piece of crap it was 2 years ago.
I wasn't banned by a person, the server banned me instantly as soon as I connected. The interface was very shabby indeed, I'm assuming it's improved since I tried it 2 years ago. I'll give it a go.ryan_w_0000 wrote:i dont think i could ever ban a heartlander . it shouldnt be a problem. the only thing being that i cant do it now. it being 3am and all here. 5 hours or so and soulseek would be on for me here...

I think you will find soulseek in it's current state to be very user friendly. I have really enhanced my collection via downloads from there, and JB and Burn have greatly benefited from my efforts there.Dan wrote: I'm reluctant to try soulseek as it was so user unfriendly 2 years ago, unless someone can tell me it's not the piece of crap it was 2 years ago.
I have been banned a few times, once when I was just getting my files loaded to my hard drive. Once by a complete asshole who I immediately banned from d/l from me. Tit for tat.
It has numerous chat rooms, and private chat as well.
To get what you want you have to be patient, and d/l off of multiple users.
You ought to give it another try.

Did you pm them asking why they banned you? I really take issue with ppl doing that. It's one thing to only allow users in your list to d/l but banning? Defeats the purpose of file sharing.ryan_w_0000 wrote:i was banned twice trying to get this doctor jeep file.... and thats really the first time something like that has happened..my luck eh?
the guys a pretty big bastard. primarily the reason im not giving anyone his soulseek addy. He said that my online collection of 12 albums and 2 video concerts wasnt 'good sharing' i had a go at him first (of course) then i logged onto my other computer with a different username and not much difference in the way of sharing and was banned again. this time i pretended i was new and he unblocked me and i got the file then
I didn't mean I was banned from downloading from an individual person. I couldn't care less about that. I was banned from the entire server within a second of connecting for the first time and was unable to reconnect.Black Planet wrote:I have been banned a few times, once when I was just getting my files loaded to my hard drive. I ban people who don't offer share anything or only share to people on their list, both of those defaet the purpose of sharing.Black Planet wrote:Did you pm them asking why they banned you? I have dial up and when I really want something, I find d/l speed increases when I don't have anyone getting stuff off me, hence, I limit to my list.hallucienate wrote:I ban people who don't offer share anything or only share to people on their list, both of those defaet the purpose of sharing.

You'll probably find that you can download max at 5k/sec and upload at 3k/sec.Black Planet wrote:I have dial up and when I really want something, I find d/l speed increases when I don't have anyone getting stuff off me, hence, I limit to my list.hallucienate wrote:I ban people who don't offer share anything or only share to people on their list, both of those defaet the purpose of sharing.
I don't remember ever having any probs downloading and uploading at those speeds when I was on dialup.
My Soulseek banned list is rather long, but I have only ever had 2 enquiries from people I have banned. One was polite and I unbanned him, the other one was abusive and couldn't spell.
Going onto Ryan, 12 albums isn't a huge amount to share, so I guess you may get some arsehole banning you for that. Not fair though is it? If you are sharing that file get in touch and I'll try and download it so people this end of the world can grab a copy quicker if that's ok? My Soulseek ID is: (wait for it...) CellThree It is case sensitive.

That's a problem I have with bittorrent. I have broadband and bittorrent downloads at my maximum speed of 30k/sec, but when I'm downloading it uses ALL my bandwidth meaning I can barely load a webpage, they load slower than a tenth of the speed of 56k dialup. When upload is maxed out download suffers greatly (it was the same when I was on dialup), but it has a slider to limit your upload, but what It also needs but doesn't have is to be able to limit the download.Black Planet wrote:I have dial up and when I really want something, I find d/l speed increases when I don't have anyone getting stuff off me, hence, I limit to my list.hallucienate wrote:I ban people who don't offer share anything or only share to people on their list, both of those defaet the purpose of sharing.

30k/sec I'd kill for that! Well, not really.Dan wrote:That's a problem I have with bittorrent. Surfing while on soulseek? I don't even bother to attempt surfing while soulseek is onf or the reason you list, it takes forever.
Soulseek has the ability to limit d/l.
The tracker is a piece of software you install on a server. It's the heart of bittorrent I suppose.Quiff Boy wrote:"bittorrent tracker"
wassat?
When someone wants to provide a file over bittorrent they create a .torrent file which is in the region of 5 to 50k on average. This small file is uploaded to the tracker. Someone who wants to download the file downloads the .torrent file. Clicking on the .torrent file starts the bittorrent client and you start to download. While you download you also upload to other people who are also downloading. The tracker helps to, erm, keep track of all the ip's and who's sending which part of the file to who to ensure it's done as efficiently as possible. This means that if you upload a 50mb file you only need to upload just over 50mb before the first person has the complete file, then it's good etiquette to leave the torrent client open to help upload the file to those who haven't finished yet.
It's way more efficient than any other filesharing methods. For example 6 days ago I uploaded a 48mb video to a tracker and once there were enough seeds (the uploaders are called seeds) I disconnected and left them to it (I just had to re-seed another 14mb to help half a dozen people finish downloading), and in the last 6 days 1090 people have downloaded the file. That's a little over 51gigabytes and I only had to upload around 70-ish mb.
You can make the tracker public, meaning anyone can start a torrent (meaning you have to admin it strictly or you'll get all sorts of numptys trying to upload porn, warez, or a 4gig rip of Lord Of The Rings), or you can have it set so you only let certain approved people start a torrent.
I do almost all my downloading with bittorrent these days. It takes me around 6 to 8 hours to get a 450mb file. It's really rather good.

yeah, but on flip side, sharing also involves giving...Black Planet wrote:I have dial up and when I really want something, I find d/l speed increases when I don't have anyone getting stuff off me, hence, I limit to my list.hallucienate wrote:I ban people who don't offer share anything or only share to people on their list, both of those defaet the purpose of sharing.

I can see both sides of this coin. In an ideal world, sure you'd let anyone who wanted stuff to d/l from you, but in terms of slowdown (especially on a dial-up) it just gets too much to cope with.

You better show him a great time, and that includes if at all possible, some time in those wonderful parks you are so fond of photographing. You know the rocks and things.
And yes I'd like to see pics but that is Entirely left to JB's discretion.
Have fun.

It looks like he's only here for a night, so I don't know if there'll be time to drag him around Table Mountain. His hosts will probably do that for him anyway.Black Planet wrote:Do you know what I find odd? I don't even know you. But you and I are JBs friends.
