So who actually played on Floodland, anyway?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Dominion is most definitely a real sax. You could'nt fake that with a synth in 1987; as it is, it would be pretty hard to fake that one now. Maybe with a Korg Triton or similar synth and alot of editing you could pull it off now, but certainly not with a Yamaha DX-7 or whatever the Sisters were using back then. That being said, it's a very cool solo. Been meaning to learn it on guitar for some time; never did...

I'm fairly certain it's synth bass throughout most, if not all of the album, though. Dominon and Lucretia are too robotic sounding to be real; there's no variation at all in the sound of the notes. Even played with a pick, the bass wouldn't sound that consistant and mechanical. Flood I and This Corrosion are obviously a synth. 1959 has no bass whatsoever. The official site says at least half of Neverland is a synth (no mention of the rest...?) though oddly enough, it's more realistic sounding than either Lucretia or Dominion. Flood II and Driven Like The Snow are debatable; if I had the album with me, I'd give it a listen, but I don't. :? Driven has a pretty prominent "real" sounding bass line; I wouldn't be too surprised if that's the only real bass on the whole thing...

I heard a similar story, but The Kilburn national was mentioned s the venue.

So why is Danny mass on the credits? :innocent:

Well, whoever played the bass on Emma, it's a feckin great 'woody' sound. Ok then, who is playing the tinny guitar?

Apparently he's in the This Corrosion video appearing momentarily sticking his head out of a dustbin. I don't have the video to hand but last time I looked the person in the dustbin looked nothing like him. Anyone got a screencap?

Peter Peret (?) of The Only Ones is mentioned in the liner notes, too. Eddie MArtinez played with Robert Plamer on a VH1 special years back. He was a hot-s**t player, for sure. :von:

Not quite sure what Perret did other than hang around and offer moral support. Or maybe do some duelling baritones between recordings. :von:

On the other hand, John Perry The Only Ones' guitarist is credited with 'special guest guitars' on VT.:notworthy:

I was a big The Only Ones fan. Probably the only one. No pun intended. :innocent:

I need a copy of the Rose Of Avalanche at the town & country club video. I can play that 1st, then go for a p*ss before playing Crusade. It will be just like Leeds Poly november 1986.

Where did you hear there was a video? From what I heard it was recorded with full lightshow and dry ice but no audience or film crew...

...and that Eldo sung to a backing tape so fat pat wouldn't have been there at all.

Of course Von might have stuck a camcorder on a tripod and left it running to record it that way, much like there's usually a camcorder set up somewhere on the sound desk at some of the gigs. I guess the videos are a bit boring though with nobody at the controls.

Right, well, shouldn't be on here after smoking a doobie anyway, then.

Yeah, I guess it was John Perry I was thinking of. 'Course, from what I remember, Peter Perrett wouldn't be top choice for offering any moral support. At least, not this side of Syd Barrett. :innocent:

to doubt that lucretia has a real bass is almost a sacrilege - for everybody who has ever held an instrument with strings in their hands.
and: to compose a track like lucretia affords real instruments (please compare with the 'new' songs  )

Just to return to this briefly, I've just been reading through an interview with AE in UTR 11, and he says:
With the exception of the solos on "This Corrosion", I myself played all the guitars on Floodland, so there's tons and tons of them.
I think we can safely presume that the solo on Floodland was courtesy of Eddie Martinez, so that's the definitive answer for the guitars.
