James Blast wrote:Believe it or not, but I did hire one of them (I was after a Golf or an Astra, long story) to ferry myself, Andrew S + Big Si down to leeds for Black Oktober 2. It was a very nice car chock full of gadgets, leather upholstry etc. But it drank petrol like it was going out of fashion and the acceleration sucked.
So, to sum up:
looked good
was very comfy
handled like a tank
guzzled petrolium
That bit I do understand, but I rather meant I don't understand why every company in the world seems to be after the MG marque rather than the rest of the lot ex-BLMC (or whatever name you'd like to give the group) had. What does it have others don't have?

1st car - Audi A4
2nd Car - Audi A4
3rd Car - Volvo V40
4th and Current Car - Audi A4
Due for replacement in January as it's got 90,000 miles on it (commuting from Leeds to Nottingham / Northampton adds about 5-700 miles a week!) and I'm currently hoping to get another A4, although I fancy the Avant this time.
Dream car these days is the Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster, although the Gallardo Spyder looks a bit tasty
That said, the new Audi RS4 is a beast of a car and its a snip at 50 grand...

It is a DNEPR, which is even worse than an URAL.
But it is a treat to drive. Mind, I didn't say it is lovely to drive, or even cool to drive... actually it's a bugger to drive but it's... an experience in itself.
The Ukranian factory of these bikes shut down years ago, but the Dutch provider of Ural/Dnepr (
Gossie near Tholen) told me stories that were quite hilarious, involving drunk employees lying dormant on their machines, only to wake up when a half-finished motorblock thumped against their heads

i must put that anorak away one day!
That was after the war indeed. IIRC the only licenser to really be allowed to fiddle about a bit with the car?
Before the war they were the builders of astonishing cars, along the line of Rolls-Royce, Hispano-Suiza, Duesenberg and the likes, with Knight engines. Very fancy stuff! Sadly they went bankrupt

First car was a midnight blue Ford Capri 2.0 GL, with small bat hanging from mirror. Cool-as-f*ck parked outside the VI Form wing

They went bankrupt because nobody ever needed to buy another Minerva. They were too good
Great stuff, Minerva

Though they were very good cars, that might be pushing it too far a bit
They were just hugely expensive, even their 'cheap' Minervette models were unaffordable. The company was sold to Imperia after bankrupcy (another Belgian carmaker), which in its turn hardly survived the war. They also were active in truck-manufacturing, and that's been the basis for the Minerva-Land Rover. They stopped building those at the end of the fifties (which was the end of the company), the Belgian army continued using them until the eighties
Rumour has it they still have spare cars standing across the country
