OMM's greatest cover versions - part three
August 10, 2007 1:10 PM
Kate Bush is rocketing ahead, in OMM's bid to find the
best cover song of all time
Kate%20Bush1.jpg
Votes have been piling in for OMM and Audi TT's poll
on the greatest cover versions ever, and the debate
about who deserves the number one spot is fiercer than
ever. The competition is a close run thing: the
Clash's version of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's 'Police &
Thieves', and Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' are popular
but the surprise frontrunner is Kate Bush.
With her cooing, striking vocals, the idiosyncratic
chanteuse is arguably the the essence of an acquired
taste. Watch an eerie live performance of her take on
Elton John's 'Rocket Man' from Wogan in 1991 here to
make your own mind up. And if Kate's cover doesn't
float your boat, have a glance at William Shatner's
smoke-veiled 'interpretation' of the same song,
introduced by Bernie Taupin at the 1978 Science
Fiction film awards.
If these contenders are leaving you gasping at a
scandalous exclusion then there's just five days left
until the poll closes, so get your vote in and support
your favourite track.

Madness' cover of Money Money Money and TSOM's covers
of pretty much anything you like (Jolene, Emma, Two
Worlds Apart, Comfortably Numb) knock Ms Bush into a
cocked hat.

@VonEldritch: Thanks for that. Some of them did/do
indeed rock LAMF. When Ofra Haza baulked at a
Jane-Birkin-style follow-up to , I rang Ms Bush to ask
her if she'd step up. No reply. Therefore Ms Bush
sucks LAMF. - AE.

Whereas the Guardian doesn't allow certain characters
in comments . . . that should have read:
follow up to "previous business"

Narcostate - thanks...but Taz and GoodGuy are still
waiting for the new album (and probably gooshyfood
too), as are the massed ranks of the faithful. Please
please please?

@VonEldritch: Unfortunately, Taz and Good Guy went
back to Detroit, along with the ever-reigning Miss
Detroit. None of them appear to be wanting anything
from me.

@Narcostate - in diesem Fall there would seem to be
little standing in the way of putting pen to paper, or
stylus to wax disk, whatever your preference. Oder
sag' uns bestimmt that we wait in vain. Orson Welles'
character in a Carol Reed film plus the New York City
area code at gmail, or at the usual forum.
