Yeh, there's a remarkable climactic similarity twixt here 'n' there at times. Although, being so far inland, it can get stinking bloody hot here (although this summer's shaping up to be a cool one, thank gods). I really need to live in Vancouver...but the damn Canadians are soooooooo uncooperative.

It sounds as if the colonists are confused between crumpets and scones. Crumpets must be eaten with butter, but may also have honey (yum yum) or jam (yum) placed upon their cratered surfaces. Note: the correct orientation for a crumpet is smooth side down. Do not under any circumstances attempt to eat them upside down, or "commes les australians", especially in polite company. Any number of promising social gatherings with one's prospective inlaws or employers have been derailed by such behaviour. Don't Do It.
Honey is good because it oozes down into the crumpet's pores and is extra-specially good. Important: Crumpets must be served piping hot, straight from the toaster or the toasting fork.

Scones are strictly jam and whipped/clotted cream territory. They should be light and fluffy, cut with a knife along a horizontal axis, then spread with jam on which a dollop of cream is placed. Each half should be consumed in a maximum of 2 bites. Scones should be served ever so slightly warm, about 30 minutes out of the oven having been left to rest under a clean dry tea-towel.

Scones are summer afternoons on the lawn with a pot of tea and the good china. The more decadent among you may choose to bring the wireless out and listen to the cricket or tennis commentary, but you will find that the sound of bird-song and the soft buzz of passing bees all the accompaniement you need for the perfect scone experience.

Crumpets are winters by the fire, tea served hot and strong in a chunky mug. If it's peeing with rain outside, and getting dark, then so much the better. If you can find a pair of comfy slippers and a good fillum on the telly (Ice Cold in Alex, Dambusters, Reach for the Sky, Sink the Bismarck, An Affair to Remember, etc.) then the crumpet experience is greatly enhanced.

Not even. Not ever. And I do make my own. Especially critical because the rest of the colonists seem to think that scones are intended to have all sorts of unnecessary ingredients, and be positively encrusted with the sort of sugar crystals that should only be found on biscuits. And because a crumpet out of a packet is...well.

But yes, I am an iconoclast when it come to how I treat them once they've come off the griddle/out the oven. Deal with it.
