Well I can tell you one thing. I've noticed that it's almost a rule that what a person seems to be on the internet is opposite to what they are like in the flesh. On this very forum, I can think of:
- at least 5 examples of people who hardly ever post here but in real life are extremely chatty, supercool, heart and soul of the party and generally great company;
- on the contrary: people whose postcount here is a couple of thousand something, yet in real life they are shy, quiet and introvert;
- people who seem vicious and caustic and genarally very nasty, but in real life they are the kind of friends with whom one can have deep meaningful conversations and on whose support one can count in one's darkest hour (at least 3 such examples);
- people who seem very reasonable, mentally stable, clever, intellectual and knowledgeable, but in real life behave like idiots, especially after drinking too much (no, I won't mention any names or nicknames here either);
- people who on the forum seem completely nuts, daft and better to be avoided , but in real life are perfectly reasonable and trouble-free (that's myself) .
and so on...
Of course, there are many exceptions to this rule and you never know, sometimes you can meet some mad(wo)men who are really mad, and some cool folks who are really cool. So - good luck.

Well there is another option there as well _emma_ - there is also people like me. I'm here, I go to shows but I never talk to anyone because I'm usually too shy (although on the Helsinki show I did have company )

Anyway, regarding watering holes, it's a bit far off yet but I'm thinking the Foggy as a reasonable offering for late drinking and good atmosphere. Pravda isn't Pravda anymore ( ) but I was in the venue (now named Grand Social) last weekend and it was quite fantastic, good DJ, reasonable prices, and friendly door staff (so long as you don't look under 18). They also seem to do semi-regular semi-informal after-shows so I'll be keeping an eye out for anything happening there. A few folks are staying in the Merc so that's another option. The Mezz is OK, but they have a late show of their own downstairs on Friday nights, might not work out for those who just want to get a few beers in and peel off at their own pace. Bruxelles is a bit "meh" for me, the metal bar might be OK but not to everyone's taste, and anyway it's too cramped. Wouldn't touch the Oak with a 10-foot pole, nazi bouncers and was firmly catering for under-25s last time I was there. Don't really frequent anywhere else in the general area much.

So I'd vote the Foggy or (the new) Pravda, really. Probably the latter if they have something on for the night.

If the shows so far this year are any indication then at the very least they should be quite good.

John Cooper Clarke is also playing on the same night at the Button factory... I wonder if it would be possible to attend both !!

Am I the only person reticent about going to Dublin because "administrative fees" by the airlines annoy the bejeeesus out of me?

A flight doesn't cost £4.99 if you're paying £40+ each way, for goodness sake! For goodness sake!!!



Anyhow, by the time I have saved the pennies to go, there'll be no £4.99 flights left.....

I'd like to see mister Cooper Clarke too! Missed him last time he was in Antwerp... There's a pretty fine piece/interview with him in this month's Mojo Magazine btw

I was i the Foggy last night for the first time - pre Jello Biafra goig - nice place and sounds like they tailor the music to whatever gig is on that night

Ah possibly! To be fair the audience was mostly impressed but I just found him boring and a bit 'back in the day' if that makes sense. Each to their own and all that. I will stick to the other lot I think who though still doing the old songs have updated them, which has to be applauded I reckon.
