Other than that, I have been listening to a lot of Nick Cave recently, and he has to be up there with the best of them.
Bit of a long shot here, but Dreamweapon, seeing that you might be a Hunter S. Thompson fan, do you have the song that HST wrote the lyrics for and that is sung by Ralph Steadman - "These Long and Twisted Nights"? Been looking for it for some time.[/quote]

These are the lyrics for "Those weird and twisted nights"

Drive your stake through a
darkened heart
In a red Mercedes Benz
The blackness hides a speeding trap
The savage beast pretends

Ooooooo-ooo-oh yessssssss!
Ooooooo-ooo-oh yessssssss!
These long strange nights
These long strange nights
These long strange nights
Ooooooo-ooo-oh go-oo-o-od!
Ooooooo-ooo-oh go-oo-o-od!
These warped and twisted nights
These weird and tortured nights

If you write words shocked through with truth
Hunger dirt and gutter sharp
Eat the words and spurn the gutter
Climb the rise and surf

Ooooooo-ooo-oh yessssssss!
Ooooooo-ooo-oh yessssssss!
These long strange nights
These warped and civil rights
Ooooooo-ooo-oh go-oo-o-od!
Ooooooo-ooo-oh go-oo-o-od!
These warped and twisted nights
These warped and twisted rights

Ah, but never mind your rights, my love
Because . . .
They never really happened anyway
They never really happened . . . anyway

But day goes by
And love goes by
And sooner or later
We both must lie
And sooner or later
We all must die
And sooner or later
We all live a lie.

Apparently you can get it by two ways, on the HST tape "Songs of the Doomed", or on a Ralph Steadman Cd "I like it"

Hope this helps.

Heartland's certainly starting to shimmer and shift. As if the fabric of it's existence is stretching at the seams and discovering it's own essential essence.

Happened to another forum I was a founder of. Started from scratch. Built up 150 members in six months and then one day. Pop. Gone. Over to a parallel universe. No-one hosting could ever tell us why. It just happened. :urff: :|

I've got the "Doomed" tapes, which features a somewhat truncated version of the song, but the Steadman CD is nowhere to be found, it seems. Just thought someone might have an mp3 off it. Thanks anyway.

Major de Coverly wrote: Eleanor Rigby is beautifully written, and to my mind the greatest pop song of all time. PMcC was only 23 when he wrote it. That is worthy of intellectual love god status - or whatever you want to call it.
Following the current trend of resurrecting old threads (even though this one might be broke), I heard "Eleanor Rigby" on the radio this morning.

I add my vote to ATG & Erudite's suggestions.
One of mine is Sarah Maclachan(Don't be put off by the overkill of "Fallen") One of her songs "Plenty" is the truest song for me about having your heartbroken by someone shedding you like an old coat :(
