It used to be the case (and might still be) that you could get from St John's Oxford to St John's Cambridge without leaving land owned by one of the two colleges.

Indeed. It's amazing that they feel the need to chase reluctant short-term alumni like
given the size of their foundation and the fact that they are now fleecing each and every undergraduate for £9K a year.

With the info already known, anyone really intent on tracking
down would already have done so. But the guy has clearly closely guarded his privacy for thirty years now and I think we should all respect that.
