i thoguht it was so much better than Peter Grimaldi from the start. i like Jodie, and i think the not-so-drastic-or-dramatic new thang of the doc being (shock! horror!) female pales into utter insignificance next to Bradley fucking Walsh being in it. ok, he's not the greatest character actor and predictably he's playing his usual chirpy cockney sparrow-self...but did they have to have him wearing a west ham scarf to underline that he's never gonna be more than a barra-boy stereotype? literally any decent actor would jump at the chance of being in doctor who so why did they go for someone so bad? as for the menatally subnormal grandson, what kind of fucking retard learns to ride a pushbike on the top of a rocky peak? rather than a nice flat concrete car park of which shitty sheffield has fuckloads? worrying.

It didn't blow me away but it was a lot better than i expected!
I like Jodie, i like the whole yorkshire thing, (although it did turn a bit Flashdance at one point with all the Sheffield steel - i was just waiting for Sean Bean to pop up too, but sadly he didn't! )
But yeah - Bradley Walsh, can't stand him, at least he wasn't trying to crack jokes all the time but, meh.

New theme tune - need to listen to again, bit of a mash up of 80's Doctor Who meets Terminator 2 from what i remember!

Haven't been a fan of the doc since I was a kid.

I did quite enjoe a couple if the Ecclestone episodes when they rebooted it, but I never really got into any of it. It all just seemed a bit cheap and tacky

That said, I watched last night out of curiosity and really enjoyed Jodie.

The scatty thing could grow old quick - I assume that's a quirk of her recent regeneration and she'll settle into a new persona soon..? (is that how it works?)

Overall I enjoyed it. Especially the cameo of Sheffield United's stadium

Totally agree with Lee about Bradley Walsh though. Sheesh

Blimmin' loved it to bits.
Even Bradley Walsh was okay, although I suspect that's because I've never encountered him before & have no preconceptions.
& the minute she remembered she was The Doctor put a lump in my throat.
It really reminded me of the fish fingers & custard episode with Matt Smith. All the scattiness that follows a regeneration was really nicely played.
& the whole Tim Shaw of the Stenza thing was hysterical

i liked that when she was shopping for womens clothes she said "its been a long time since i had to do this". so the doctors been female before- no need to make an issue out of her gender at all then. job done.

Yeah, one of the tedious necessities of a "first episode for a new Doctor", along with the obligatory "here's my costume" reveal.

That said I really liked Jodie Whittaker's Doctor and Chris Chibnall's writing/showrunning - seemed far closer to the classic series than anything since.

It would have been nice if Chibnall had taken over earlier - like right after Russell T Davies (so we were spared Moffat) - I would have liked to have seen a Capaldi Doctor written by Chibnall, free from Moffat's bad writing and clumsy symbolism.

But as someone said on Twitter

I have my concerns due to the trailers, but I am nearly 50. If it were up to me, I'd make Dr Who like a cross between David Lynch & Tarkovsky and ruin the franchise in about 30 seconds.

Yeah, it's been that way for the last few regens. McGann didn't know who he was, Tennant was fescinated by his new teeth, Smith had no idea what he liked to eat, Capaldi took exception to the colour of his new kidneys.

It wasn't dreadful - it's been a while since I've watched a Regeneration episode so I don't remember whether the first one is usually a bit...I don't know, disjointed? I'll give it a couple of weeks to see if it beds in. I did take some exception to the fact that one of the aliens bore a striking resemblance to Hi Majestic Noodlieness, The Flying Spaghetti Monster, but I didn't feel that it warranted a strong-worded missive to Auntie about religious sensitivity.

It did occur to me that this Doctor must have been away for a while if she thought that you could still find tableware made from Sheffield steel - I was hoping that she might also add in "northern grit" to her description of the new sonic. Some parts of it were a bit "on the nose" - the reference to the sonic being like a "swiss army knife - only without the knife. Only idiots carry knives," and when the guy kicks the alien off the crane and she tells him that he had no right to do that. What, it's fine and dandy if she strands the poor bastard on Earth but it's bang out of order if the guy who was about to be killed and dedentaled takes some measure of revenge?

I'll see if it settles down, give it a couple three episodes and then make my mind up.

it was without doubt a majorly flying spaghetti monster inspired monster and no mistake. still in an infinite universe (with more importantly a finite number of imaginative writers) these things 'appen.
