thanks in advance
I like
Format Factory - rip DVD files to AVI, MPEG, rip the audio off, whatever you like. You'll want to rip the DVD to the HD first, though - use DVD Decrypter for that.
this seems to work great thanks. as does handbrake, so now i have a spare

I am using Linux in my new job.
Got the LAMP stack up and running today, including setting up vhosts for the various projects I'll be working on.

Are you playing them on the peeecee?
The free-ist thing you can do is simply pause the vid & capture the screen

If you use Media Player Classic, just use "Save Image" in the File menu.

Thanks,
Pista and
Dan,
I had thought of something to create things like this. Is it possible with the tools you mentioned? Looks soo cool ...

that's a "contact sheet"
many video editing tools can create those automatically...
it would take ages to create them manually

Oh, the prog I use to make those contract sheets is ImageGrabber II (v1 had a fault where it sometimes chose multiple copies of the same image and you weren't able to edit them).
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W5TM9YRD
First to set it up, go to options. For columns I'd suggest 4. Width 200, height 150. But this only has to be done once, once you're happy with how it looks you can leave it alone.
Open your file in it, then click the 4th icon that looks like a little TV screen and type how many photos you want it to select. Choose more than you actually need, because there'll be some rubbish ones. Look at the images and rightclick & delete any that you don't want. Then save your image.

@Quiff
Oh yes, now that you say it ... it is a contact sheet ... had not realised that ...
...
... with PhotoShop or Gimp it's not impossible but might take some time ...
@ Dan
... thanks for the link, I shall give it a try ...

I've decided to bite the bullet and properly learn Emacs.
Anyone who suggests I try vi instead will be shot.

after continuous FF crashes, i've moved to opera to see if that works. fed up of having to restart FF every ten minutes. haven't yet lost the rainbow doonwheel, tho.

Sounds like you might have a flaky FF add-on installed. Or just too many add-ons.
Have you tried launching it in safe mode with add-ons temporarily disabled?
Otherwise, Google Chrome is well worth a run out

i took all my addons off, still the same.. i already have chrome but use that for other things. opera is ok so far, so will see what happens. ta!
