For the new gothic music, in various subgenres, I prefer:

Type O, My Dying Bride, Tiamat, Katatonia, Cradle of Filth (still, sorry peeps, they are just fantastic), Zeromancer, The Gathering (as mentioned some days ago in another thread).

Ghost of Lemora are a fine modern day goth band with more 'traditional' tendencies.

And to add my tuppence worth to the Star Industry debate - agree with Maisey, Nineties is good but the Velvet album as a whole is a fantastic album.

And with Ghost of Lemora you could mention groups like Bloody Dead and Sexy, Chants of Maldoror,
Miguel and the Living Dead, Shadow Reichenstein & The Last Days of Jesus.

All fearly good bands in my book.

I remembered some others songs whom I heard some songs of which were quite good:
Morbid Poetry and The Cheshire Cat, not to forget The Faces Of Sarah (we allready had them elsewhere)
Children Of The Eighties by Morbid Poetry is a nice anthem for oldtimers..

Well, since I live in Finland now, I suppose I should mention HIM, who before the god-awful "love metal" era did a fair m*****n-esque style of music. These days they do songs for fifteen year old self-mutilators, and their lead singer keeps doing these weird groaning noises . And I'm sick to death of seing his fish-face and receeding hairline in every Finnish newspaper and magazine..
Also "The 69 Eyes" who are a walking goth cliche. They dress like and sound like a mix of the Sisters/Type O, but have absolutely no sense of irony and do it all with utter seriousness.

I quite like both of them. But more than that, I like "Jykevää on Rakkaus" by Valo & the Agents. Now that's dark, man!

Garden of delight

Partial to a bit of Love Like Blood. The vocals are mostly awful and they were very very derivative back in the day, but I think they eventually managed to carve their own unique sound thanks to a rather good guitarist.

I'm sure I've got a Garden of Delight album somewhere - produced by That Guitarist.

(Edit - no, I'm talking bollocks - it's a Flowers of Romance album. Easy mistake to make.)

I wouldn´t say I speak swedish. I started learning. but as I do so completely on my own, I found it a bit pointless to do so without having the chance to practice. That´s why I haven´t done a bit of learning in the last year..
There are schools which offer courses, but I can´t afford them. (The cheapest within my range costs 80€ each month. I hope they enjoy the hole in their head.) Why I want to speak swedish? I want to understand my old Volvo!

The first time I heard a song by them I actually liked. I sometimes wonder how rock survived its early years.

I wish I could speak German, always liked the language, only picked up a few lines and words listening to German music and watching films.
I had the chance to read German when I was still studying but was stupid enough to pick computer science instead.

i saw an interview with 69 eyes on youtube and the arrogance/and desperation to be so very goth made me turn off within seconds. having said that, i also saw an interview with and that also had me heaving. it was on a VT promotion in the USA and, to me, he appeared a right twerp. sigh.

type o negative were very good. their first album "slow deep and hard" kind of married NY hardcore punk with goth but second album "bloody kisses" is just brilliant. slowly got worse after that.

it seems that any goth band that is self consciously goth is bound to sound bad, just like self conscious indie, baggy or prog rock. its when bands unknowingly move into that terrain that it actually works: ie type o, gathering etc.

proof of this: the first couple of waves of goth bands mostly didn't have silly goth names.
