Poor and record player-less then, as I am now. Go figure... :(
:(

Record players come dirt cheap nowadays, but then again that doesn't really get you the records to play on it…

My record player, is a big old 1 piece thing with in built amp and tape deck.

Its cost £10 from a charity shop and its been banging out choons since it was bought. :D

A a record, unless its rare, will usually be cheaper than a CD. The reissue of FALAA costs £10+, while my gatefold vinyl version costs £5 AND it sounds nicer AND it looks nicer AND I can have it as MP3 sound for portability thanks to my friend with his USB vinyl player/ripper :D

does it sound as 'nice' on your mp3 player?

an honest Q as I don't own one and still don't see the point, I have Radio 4

I've kinda got a foot in both camps - I have a vinyl deck but it's about 250 miles away as it never made the move north with me. All my Sisters, Nephs & Mish vinyl is still boxed up here with me and has never been touched. I have it all on cd or download now so really they're just for show and memories.........

No it doesn't to be perfectly honest. My MP3 player broke recently and I have returned to CD walkman.

The difference in sound quality is clear, CDs barely have a leg to stand on next to records, but MP3s might as well take a running jump off a cliff.

MP3 quality music
a) doesn't sound as good actually, it just doesn't have the body if you get what I mean.
b) doesn't feel as nice. Nothing to hold, no art to look at etc etc.

I am going to get a new MP3 player because it IS damn nice to have a massive collection in one place. For example, I might not want to listen to FGG's ambient synths while walking around, but when I get a quiet moment to myself I may want to have them on. If I can only bring up to 1 CD with me (or a few more and risk damaging them) then somethings will lose out every time....

Its a tough old one.

For sure mp3's are never going to be as good as the record & neither are CDs (however SACD is absolutely incredible 8) )

But, if you take the plunge with an ipod, you can use the lossles encoder & the quality is just as good as the source.

It's all about convenience really.

Cheers.

An mp3 player can't beat a proper stereo, a proper stereo with vinyl playing will never be beaten by one with a cd attached to it.

FACT!

It has no memory ,it's sample rate is preset to infinity, doesn't fit in my pocket discretely.
It's nice to have all my record collection in the one place.
Apparently you're allowed to kill children if they touch it.
Best part of all is it's upgadeabilty
.This is where I let mh take over...

mp3 sucks. Except when travelling.

I could not live without my Sony record player which was build in the late 70ies and is still running perfectly.

I think I will spend some time of my Easter holidays with my Sony, some swiss chocolate and the mint (if not unplayed) copy of the "Stranger" double EP I recently bought on Ebay. Yapp, that sounds like a great plan.
;D

With pleasure... :D

Those nice people at places like Trichord and Origin Live will give you mysterious looking little black boxes and tubes of rigid alloy (in exchange for a few measly numbers stamped on a bit of plastic). Your MP3 player will look even nicer and be less portable, but your sample rate will go to infinity + 1 times 10,000, nyyaaahhhh!

You may have some explaining to do, so far as the missus is concerned, though.

Will an old record player damage the surface of your record? Worn stylus etc etc?

Posted: 03 Apr 2007, 12:29
by markfiend
A worn stylus is a definite no-no, but a new stylus for an old turntable shouldn't be too hard to come by.

New styluses are more expensive than buying another turntable nowadays  You'll notice when it wears out though (mine usually start to collect more dust by that time, more jumps, sound quality goes down and all that), just make sure not to put too much pressure on it and you'll be fine Maisey :D

New Stylus for old turntable: £15

New turntable with spare stylus: £40

Going and figuring: Priceless

Blimey. That shows how long since I last got a new stylus :urff:

Having said that I haven't listened to a whole lot of vinyl recently... or even since I bought my current turntable.

i always use stanton 500 mk II cartidges on my 1210 turntable.

http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/frr.p ... 2&read&3&4&

for a long time the 500s were the industry standard dj cartidge - they're robust and warp-friendly, and give a nice clear and crisp sound 8)

i've used ortofons for a while but they werent as durable or as good at playing older records with the odd scuff :|

also, stantons are way better for scratching than orotofons :P :D
