cheers dan
click on the "small" versions for full 150 dpi scans (approx 600k each).
be warned, even the "small" versions are quite big at 250k each.
if you are on dialup, be prepared to wait a while

Just to confirm the rumour: Ben (Matthews) Gunn WAS at Liverpool University, at the same time I was (84-87). In fact, he loved nothing more than to amuse the babygoths by walking round with a book 'How to play guitar' sticking out of his bag.

Far be it from me to divulge personal details about ex-band members.... but if you want to see what Ben says he's doing now you could do worse than have a look at Liverpool University, 1987, on the Friends Reunited website.

Thanks for adding the above web address, QB.
Now, under NO circumstances is anyone to use the 'send a voice message to Ben' facility pretending to be Von asking Ben to rejoin the band. That would be awfully childish.

I remember some "friend" trying to convince me that the guy who used to work the mixing/lighting desk in The Duchess was actually Ben Gunn.
I wasn't convinced

Goths have feelings too
Aaaaaand - look wot I just found: http://jasonbarnard.com/stanley-the-counting-horse/
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Great find ! And to think that I voted for this guy as greatest Sisters guitarist. It looks like watching the original Stanley would have been more entertaining than that lot.mh wrote:Aaaaaand - look wot I just found: http://jasonbarnard.com/stanley-the-counting-horse/

Well it's the first time I've been (deliberately ?) misquoted ! Whilst I was clearly stating that watching a police horse stamping his foot would be more enjoyable than having to sit through a gig by the band of the same name, with clever editing I appear to be saying that said band were better than the Sisters. And people wonder why doesn't enjoy interviews.Quiff Boy wrote:Nikolas Vitus Lagartija wrote:Great find ! And to think that I voted for this guy as greatest Sisters guitarist. Did Ben really write the riff to Alice?
I know him & Von had to settle up financially after SGWBM came out (Ben getting less than he asked for but more than Von thought he was worth from memory?), but I always figured that just meant that he felt he was entitled to some money from being on what was at the time a top 5 UK album. But the riff to Alice is pretty timeless/classic/insert-cliche-as-you-see-fit(!).
No sign of his name on the writing credits on the CD, but that would explain why he contacted Von after a long time without their paths crossing - surely a lot of people purchased the compilation so as to own a copy of that one song in particular?

It would be up to the record company, rather than Von, to issue royalties to the performers so that's unlikely to be the reason for any financial settlement between the two men as Ben is mentioned in the credits (although not specifically as a performer so it's just possible that Von neglected to point out that Ben was due a share).Mothra wrote:Did Ben really write the riff to Alice?

On the other hand, the writing is credited solely to Von, which means he's been receiving sole royalties for it. If Ben got him to admit to co-authorship then Von would have to pay Ben out of his own pocket as he'd already received all the money.
The fly in that ointment is that Von once implied that his publishers owned the entire rights to his songs. He didn't say when that started and it may well only refer to songs published after they got a major deal but if Alice was included then it would be up to the publishers to settle.
