They probably did more, but then it wouldn't cross the channel as often as the other way round? After all, the world's been pretty Anglophile the last couple of decades, non?

Myself being a rare exception. So maybe I'm biased but I'd be more inclined to say Americanised (s instead of a z there is deliberate, just to drive home my resistance )

But still, I'm seeing Anglophile more as leaning towards Anglo-Saxon (which includes both UK and USA). After all, in pretty much every random country around the globe you're most likely to hear songs in English on the radio, watch shows where English is spoken on telly and so on. It's become the Lingua Franca of the modern world, pretty much.

You blew our socks off with your chatting to that woman when we were trying to get the Metro into Brussels. Having said that I thought until this year that ALL Flemish people spoke fluent French as well Oh how I was educated - my French is probably better than half of yours

Getting back to the subject, I was speaking to a friend of the now departed landlords, and stated that they were given literally hundreds of chances to turn the pub around, and had never seen anybody turn away so much business, basically down to their own idea of what people should be wearing.

Why anybody else would want to wear anything else other than black is still a mystery to me, but apparently if you weren't 110% in black, or had the right kind of style, then it was very much frowned upon and you were asked to leave.

Probably why The Elephants Head is such a popular pub! Hell, everybody that was barred for all manner of stupid reasons from The Dev drinks there!

That's true. They certainly missed many business opportunities due to their ultra strict dresscode. I think dressode is cool for clubs, but one shouldn't overdo it in a place like a pub, where you would like to be able to go after work, without having to get changed in you car before.
I was refused entry once, this really had me laughing, cause round here i get the looks because of dressing too "alternative" and "goth" (altough i'm more of an industrialist, or some have called me...futurist....). Maybe they didn't like my yellow t-shirt that was peakin out of my jacket.......I'm a bad girl and the world is a strange place.....besides : it smells funny.

The answer is simple, you don't really need anyone else when you've got Johnny Halliday.

Well I didn't have any trouble getting in, even a year before I was legally allowed to do so (being nice to the lady on the door is always a decent start) what's more I have brought normally dressed people in with me in a few occasions and had no trouble. Having spent time sitting and reading during the day and time drinking on a friday or saturday night I have never noticed the kind of elitism people are talking about, and its always full to bursting before a club night.

In that case the management have only themselves to blame, whilst the demise of the pub as it stands impacts on the clientele, management who are elitist "dress-code nazis" deserve to fail, as they turn away business opportunities in order to maintain the "purity" of their venue. This is crass stupidity.

I've only ever been to The Dev a couple of times. Your passion serves you well Maisey. Ever thought of going into pub management yourself?
