Another one up now ... main menu in/background. Again, all criticism welcomed.

I'll probably try to formalise the Vision Thing menu next. Will get around to FALAA when I have a little more time to 'run-up' some curtains ... also this will probably take an eternity to render. Then have to think up something for the Overbombing menu, which will just have Temple '92 and Under The Gun links.

Really impressed by what you've done so far- especially the Floodland one.

I'm not sure about the curtains theme. It's a bit Monty Python for me!

If you're going for live vids, how about something emerging from/backed with dense pink, orange or green smoke? Perhaps with the intro to Snubnose? The disorientating coloured smoke's the overriding visual sensation at gigs. That, and watching Scotty trying to keep his specs on.

I agree that so far the Floodland one is definitely looking the best ... I checked them all out full size on a TV screen at the w/e. Presently I'm playing with a cloudy red sky background to the flag one ... which looks like being a definite improvement.

Smoke effects could be a great idea! Maya has a pretty effective smoke generator ... as long as I can figure out how to get it to hang around and swirl rather then just rising upwards which is it's default inclination.

Re:NTSC->PAL - I tried to do a similar DVD recently and found the conversion of videos from NTSC to PAL to be the biggest problem. I tried loads of pro software packages and didn't get a decent result until I tried VSO's "Convert X to DVD" which is a tiny program but managed to cope perfectly with strobed grainy footage and quick cuts, at least part of that would apply to SOM promos!

Hi Paaaaul! Thanks for the tip about the VSO software. I gave it a try and am afraid to say that I wasn't all that impressed with the results. Ulead DVD workshop has an algorhythm that does the job at least as well ... possibly slightly better, but even so ...

I'm not convinced that there is any really good software based solution to NTSC to PAL standard conversion ... PAL to NTSC no problem but not the other way around ... the NTSC system carries very slightly less data than PAL ... you can lose a little one way and it doesn't make much difference ... the other way around and it's always going to be lacking something.

I reckon that to do this really well would require something like one of these:

I reckon Von Oben would probably agree that you can only expect to get what you pay for with these things ... I don't think that the $49.50 ones would be up to much.

It's no problem for me to make the whole thing in NTSC format. Probably easier for any State-side Heartlanders who may be interested too as it seems that most recent-ish european equipment can handle NTSC but a lot of American equipment can't handle PAL.
