1. Hawking radiation has never actually been proven or seen.
2. One of the reasons for building this thing was to prove the existence of Hawking radiation.
3. General relativity is just "wrong" at the quantum level.

QED: The proposition that this thing is safe because of Hawking radiation and general relativity is a bunch-of-horse-crap.

Personally, I'll be laying money on "still here on Thursday", but the argument for safety is a little dubious.

I understood that the safety of this experiment was nothing to do with Hawking radiation: The micro-black-holes that (hypothetically) could be generated are so small that it would take the rest of the life of the universe to even find another subatomic particle to 'eat'.

The gravity of a proton is incredibly weak; the gravity of the whole planet is weak enough for us to escape with our rockets, and it's the equivalent mass to about 36(with 50 zeros after it) protons.

Collisions with roughly the same energy as will happen in the Atlas detector happen hundreds of times a second as cosmic rays hit the atmosphere; none of them have ever created a quantum strangelet or a micro-black-hole that ate the planet.

Finally, the scientists working at CERN are (by and large) people with families, with children. Do you think they would do this if they thought there was the slightest danger?

I have absolutely no doubt that these experiements are safe, was just pointing out the above argument is tosh. A case of bad journalism if you ask me, since no physicist would be quoting general relativity at such small scales. (Hawking radiation contradicts general relativity anyway).


Personally, if they do manage to create a mini-black hole, I'm expecting a bunch of daleks to jump through the void...
