Strange what you miss when you're away from home - red label tea-bags (I'm not picky in this regard, any supermarket brand will do), plain-chocolate Digestives (or HobNobs), Ribena (it is available here in the big Chinese supermarkets - presumably because all the people who grew up in HK and now live here want it - but it is prohibitively expensive, $10 for a litre), Marmite, almond slices (there used to be a bakery on the corner of Cardigan Road and one of the Ashvilles, just down from the Co-Op, that did the best almond slices, loaded with jam, not to mention incredibly cheap ham-salad baps. Anyone know if it's still there? On the right hand side as you're going down the hill, pass the co-op and the dodgy video shop on the corner), meat pies and pasties (there are days when I would happily risk life imprisonment for a chicken-n-mushroom slice, a saussie roll, or a cheese n'onion pastie), potato scallops (I'll bet the chippie in the Beechwoods is long closed, but they used to do the best potato scallops and battered sausage, and they'd throw in crispy bits if you asked nicely). Does anyone live in the area? If you do, can you pop into the corner shop at the end of Beechwood Avenue and say hello to Paul Singh for me?
