I'm sure it would guarantee the mentalist route in court.

We shouldn't be talking like this at Xmas. Let them have their time with family. New Years day we strike.

No. Why should it be?

Well okay, since you want to turn this into a discussion on taste and perception.
The Dark Side of the Moon is a seminal piece of work that I have lived with for decades: it continues to amaze and delight me with its sound, textures and concept. I remember buying the album shrinkwrapped. When I opened it, it still had a smell of what I later came to know was printers dryer ink mingled with "crackback" adhesive. At the time it was majestic and part of the "album experience" - a 12" piece of art, in your hands for £2.15p. The entire concept from music to design was revolutionary - get over the lack of product name, the album sleeve formed a mandala for window displays in record shops. Remember them?
My favourite The Pink Floyd album has varied over the years (Meddle then WYWH) but there is something very special about The Dark Side that keeps me returning and finding nuggets I'd missed.
It's not a work of genius, it's a work of, call it planets aligning/synchronicty/happenstance. It transcends normal reference.
There really is no other album (PF included) that sounds like it does - unique. Don't fuck with it Amerikan dickheids, you'll only make a mess of it. :|

how's that?

now get it up ye! ;D

Wot he said.

(except mine cost more than that)

There really isn't anything else like it.
The Porkies try, but don't even come close.
No-one does.
Doesn't mean to say they're crap.

I'm sure many would have a freakout if the FL decided to cover First And Last And Always too.

Nah, whatever,
everything released after Reptile House is crap anyway. :innocent:

but I think what James is talking about has more to do with nostalgia than with good music. I really like Dark Side and I am not going to doubt any of its magnificence but since I have only discovered it decenia after its release it did not have the impact on me as it did on olther* people.
in fact since last year it has gotten a totally different meaning for me and now can't listen to it without thinking about a darker time in my life.
if some other band thinks they can do something new with it, let them try, I'm sure the royalties will go to the people who did the real effort. but if you as a fan don't like it I can only sugest one thing, Don't listen to it.

*yes I know that is not a word

Nope! it is not nostalgia (and I thought I explained that) The Dark Side of the Moon album has something indefinable, to attempt a cover version, any cover version (Dub Wank All Star Fist Fucks included) dilutes something very natural and holy.

... and I did try both, they left me in tears

yes Sir.

I still think there is nothing wrong with covering any kind of music or song, by anyone.
the only thing you can lose or gain is some credibility, but since I never liked FL it does nothing to me.

Cover versions can be flattering.
There are hundreds of covers of The Cure songs out there.
Most are sh!te but some are passable & one or two are actually better than the originals.
I can deal with that (mostly).
But I never thought about them losing or gaining credibility. Prolly because they never delivered anything like The Dark Side Of The Moon. Who knows?

TDSOTM transcends everything I think. It's almost "beyond music".
It just shouldn't be messed with.
It's perfect as it is.

nice way of thinking but consider that: we're moving forward because among us are people who does not care about 'sacred' things. even in music.

that kind of things might be take as haughtiness and there's no other options, there only successes or fall.
but die hard fans will never like this.

just a theoretical question: what would you do if PF said: "we're going to record TDSOTM again" ?

okay, my turn first Mr. 'Foreigns' -
take a very precious album you hold dear that delivers a new experience every time you play it... k?

then imagine a band you hate having a go at covering it

sticking my pennies worth in.
Buy it, listen to it and then tell all and sundry it's not as good as the original, al la Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells rehashes

BeeHive Cureboi!

good point jande, the TB rehashes were cringeworthy 'new age' bollix, spare me from that pish :|

anyway, the heart of The Pink Floyd has passed away, Richard Wright gave them a more compassionate sound otherwise they would'a bin' an heavy metal band.

I actually think they could make a fist of it - I've still got Desinto on, The Mum if asked me if I had to have it on so loud and I said sorry, turned it down then had to turn it back up and tell her "Yes!" I did need it on that loud!
