The Dark Side of the Moon is a seminal piece of work that I have lived with for decades: it continues to amaze and delight me with its sound, textures and concept. I remember buying the album shrinkwrapped. When I opened it, it still had a smell of what I later came to know was printers dryer ink mingled with "crackback" adhesive. At the time it was majestic and part of the "album experience" - a 12" piece of art, in your hands for £2.15p. The entire concept from music to design was revolutionary - get over the lack of product name, the album sleeve formed a mandala for window displays in record shops. Remember them?
My favourite The Pink Floyd album has varied over the years (Meddle then WYWH) but there is something very special about The Dark Side that keeps me returning and finding nuggets I'd missed.
It's not a work of genius, it's a work of, call it planets aligning/synchronicty/happenstance. It transcends normal reference.
There really is no other album (PF included) that sounds like it does - unique. Don't fuck with it Amerikan dickheids, you'll only make a mess of it.

but I think what James is talking about has more to do with nostalgia than with good music. I really like Dark Side and I am not going to doubt any of its magnificence but since I have only discovered it decenia after its release it did not have the impact on me as it did on olther* people.
in fact since last year it has gotten a totally different meaning for me and now can't listen to it without thinking about a darker time in my life.
if some other band thinks they can do something new with it, let them try, I'm sure the royalties will go to the people who did the real effort. but if you as a fan don't like it I can only sugest one thing, Don't listen to it.

Nope! it is not nostalgia (and I thought I explained that) The Dark Side of the Moon album has something indefinable, to attempt a cover version, any cover version (Dub Wank All Star Fist Fucks included) dilutes something very natural and holy.

the only thing you can lose or gain is some credibility, but since I never liked FL it does nothing to me.

Cover versions can be flattering.
There are hundreds of covers of The Cure songs out there.
Most are sh!te but some are passable & one or two are actually better than the originals.
I can deal with that (mostly).
But I never thought about them losing or gaining credibility. Prolly because they never delivered anything like The Dark Side Of The Moon. Who knows?

TDSOTM transcends everything I think. It's almost "beyond music".
It just shouldn't be messed with.
It's perfect as it is.
