Bought a second hang Garrard turntable which apperently came fully tested. I've powered it up, but the platter won't spin. If I give it a shove it spins for a bit and makes plenty of sound but it slows to a stop after about 10 or 15 seconds.
What the hell am I doing wrong?

Another question...
Something inside squeaks. I'm pretty sure its the belt as it mostly only does it when its speeding up. How can I fix this? Sometimes it does it when the record is playing, which is a total nightmare.
New belt?

Take the belt off and try turning it by hand. If it still squeaks it's most likely the bearing. Might just need a drop of oil, but - depending on the TT construction - this can be a fiddly job.
If it doesn't, put the belt back on and turn it by hand. If it squeaks then it's a new belt.

I bought a Nad 533 from Richer Sounds back in '97, and it's still running perfectly. The idea of putting weights on the tone arm worries me a little!

Ach don't lose sleep, Poppa Debaser used to put old pennies on the arm thingy. Worked a treat.
