I think Duran Duran started off well but they soon decayed (do you see what I did there? decayed - decade)
Spandau, also good to begin - but they had gone to mould well before "Gold"

I've paid my money to see White Lies & BMRC a few times, they're decent enough but not exactly breaking the mould.

Which bit in particular? Your subsequent 'Joy' list of bands I've never heard of seems to prove my point that there was much to appreciate despite the lack of stadium bands. Apart from U2 and American hair-metal I can't think of any massive 80s acts.
