The Milan bit is definitely relevant but wrong era song - think much, much earlier!

Nope!
1 more clue; Milan is relevant, its an early song and colour is definitely relevant.

Err… don't know if I'm allowed to put 2 guesses in one post, but no one else seems to have any ideas so here goes.
Either "with the sunlight died and the night above me"
or "black wind come carry me far away"
Both Temple of Love

Oh dear. It seems my mind works in a lot stranger and roundabout ways that other people's. Should I give hints?
(I really like all the guesses so far, they make a lot of sense, it's just not what I had in mind.)
It's not about the smoke, or the sky, or any colours. Think of the process that smoke/that chimney signifies.

"My heart my flame" - Heartland.
Interestingly, I always heard it as "my heart my flame, my hearth my road" which would go even better with the chimney.

Okay, the chimney is in the Vatican, maybe that helps?

In the black sky thunder sweeping
Underground and over water
Sounds of crying weeping will not save
Your faith for bricks and dreams for mortar

Right song, wrong lyric
(also, OMG, I have advanced to "Gonzoid". I swear I wasn't actively trying to.)

Ok… I think what made that one hard was not realising that this was in the Vatican - from that angle it looks like a pretty ordinary chimney on a pretty ordinary building. Though I'm surprised that someone on here with more knowledge of world affairs didn't recognise it.
Anyway, here's mine…
