This was my introduction to Mark Smith (when I was an undergraduate):

I came across it as a huge fan of Nick Cave and anything Shane was involved with. MES was new to me. The interview makes him come off as a huge asshole. I did eventually develop a taste for The Fall, but I always thought MES was kind of an asshole. Nothing has made my mind change. Nevertheless, RIP.

But now, I've re-read the interview. I wrote my dissertation on Nietzsche. I'm forced to conclude that MES is still an asshole, but goddam it, he's f**king RIGHT. His (brief, presumably inebriated) presentation of Nietzsche is crude, but basically correct. Shane - who I consider one of the greatest poets in the English language when he's not choking on his own vomit - has it all totally wrong.

There were legends in those days: the heroes of old, the men of renown.

Was really gutted when I heard MES died. Met him in 1990 after a gig, and he was happy to chat and sign a few items. Even asked what I thought of the latest album at the time (Extricate), and which tracks I preferred. He was a really top bloke, and completely different from the way he was portrayed in various papers. Sadly missed...
