I suspect a gentleman's obligations may be slightly relaxed in cases where the 'lady' is none too discreet herself?

I think AE is far too clever to commit slander, and implied that he 'knew' a certain person 'quite well' or some such euphemism.
In any case, even if he had said 'I slept with Barbara Ellen' it wouldn't have been slander unless it denigrated her character in some way.
And even then, it wouldn't become an issue unless she chose to deny it. And I don't know why she would, anyway, although she might think he was being a little ungentlemanly.
I shall stop now, because I'm confusing myself.
