The only reason I lived in Leeds was because of the Sisters. Well, maybe not the only reason, but the biggest. Met my girl there as well so it's got a special place in my heart.

Then we retired to the sleepy hamlet of York. Which has the odd Sisters connection as well

I might be relocating to Leeds/York sometime later this year, if I get a job at Tadcaster brewery. What are the house rent prices like in this area? Anything at all available in or around Tadcaster? I'm thinking about renting for maybe a year and looking to buy after this, once I've checked out the lie of the land. What is the bus service like between Leeds/York and Tadcaster? (can't drive, yet!).

I live down the road in York. The "Coastliner" bus runs every 30 mins from Leeds -> Tadcaster -> York -> Malton and then on to places like Scarborough and Whitby. Typical journey times to York and Leeds from Tads are 20 and 30 mins respectively (on a good day). Avoid travelling to Whitby on this bus - it takes over 3 hours and there are only 2 per day!

Rents on 1 bedroom flats in York city centre start at around £350 pcm, a 2 bedroom terraced will be around £450 (cheaper if you go further out).

Only ever been to Leeds once. '82ish to a festival. Futurama 4? Queens something? Can't remember.

I do remember we were guilible enough to buy tickets months in advance with the promise of Japan, Cure and Killing Joke headlining only to turn up and be presented with Gang Of Four and The Professionals. P got bottled off stage which was quite funny as one of my school mates was playing with them then. Seeing GOF didn't bother me as I was a fan but my gig companion hated them.

GOF also did a supersub appearance at Bingley 81 if I remember correctly. They must have been the pop band equivalent of Liverpool's David Fairclough.

Queen's Hall. Used to be a huge cattle shed near the train station in the days when it was the dodgy end of town. Went to a beer festival there once but never a gig, though it had a reputation as a lousy venue -concrete floor, no heating, no atmosphere. Still. Well, there's the outdoor venues; Roundhay Park, Temple Newsam (if the NIMBYs lay off) but they're limited to the summer. And even then you've got about a 60% chance of it turning into a mudbath.

And about an 80% chance of some ar$eh0les burning the toilet block down

As for indoors, the Poly and The Uni only hold about a couple of thousand each.

All Leeds caters for is the clubbers. I don't get it, surely venues would do better financially out of a boozy rock crowd than an e-d up club crowd who just drink water and lucozade?

What about Elland road? didn't the Happy Moandays play there once?
Leeds United would probably let you hire it for about 20 pounds.

well that's where you're mistaken. the profit margin on soft drinks in a pub/club is astronomical compared with the humble pint of falling down water. and as for water - two quid plus for a bottle of water? not much profit in that is there...

Not so much a career move as a career save. The brewery I work at in Edinburgh is closing in December. I've worked there for 20 years, man and boy <sniff>

Seriously considering relocating to Tadcaster. I will decide for definite on Monday. I'm single and have no ties in Edinburgh, so why not? I fancy a change of scenery.

I'll be renting my flat in Edinburgh out because it's built right beside the doomed brewery on the canal side and the whole area is set for a revamp. It's doubled in value since I bought it 10 years ago and should go up again in the next couple of years. Hopefully I will get around £400-£450 a month for it, which will cover the cost of renting in Leeds/York/Taddy.

I was put off outdoor gigs by the only one I went to - The Stones @ Roundhay Park in 82. Too much sun, too much beer, too far back, too tired to give a sh!t by the time they came on. And then a very long queue for the buses back into town.
