In which case the video (£5 off ebay) is like the Mona Lisa, whereas a crackly bootleg with substandard sound is like buying a postcard of the Mona Lisa.

My thoughts exactly.

You probably haven t heard the RAH boot otherwise you d know

Well - it really depends on what you're after. I once bought something from J @ the Happening. Neat price for neat gig. I've thought about doing it myself (the remasters I sometimes do) just to undercut the the people who are selling things at a high price (would put them up for a fiver or something). But I'm really apprehesive about it. Prefer the weeding principle and really don't want it to become merchandise of some sort. Unless there is some kind of guarantee that something at least goes to the band.

Doesn't the starting price become irrelevant if you get two people in a bidding war? If people are prepared to pay silly money for what is after all the equivalent of what is weeded around here with some artwork and a label on the disc, that's upto them.

Actually your artwork is quite good so buy a labelling kit, stick 're-mastered' on your ebay description and you'll be quids in. :innocent:

Will never happen. Bootleggers don't do it for love* but for the money.

*excepting those who tape for their own pleasure/collection/friends etc

EUR 421.00

F@ck!ng Hell! Thats...*consults currency converter*... approx £282.

Mad!!!! Mad Mad Mad Mad Crazy people!

EDIT: And, looking at other things he's bought, he's already bought the RAH vid for 5.87 EUR.
Now he can listen to it in not as good sound with a bit of vinyl surface noise. Nice!

taylor - don't quite understand what you're trying to say - but if it involves some idiot spending $500+ then YES we have to laugh, big time. :von:

John,

I would do it with a buy now option (as J. does) to avoid the bidding process - and really do it to undercut the insane prices these things go for. Dunno, what does everybody else thing of this?

A real acetate of a real record would be worth a lot. That's just a boot so it's worth as much as some idiot is willing to pay.

I paid 6 quid for a thompson twins acetate once!

To give a more detailed answer to this (as I've been thinking about it over the weekend). It really isn't about racking a lot of money in but to undercut those who do. Hence the buy now option. Cost would work out as follows:

CD-R: 0.70
2 x full colour print (double sided/100gm)= 2.00 (approx)
1 x b/w label= 1.00
1 x Ebay fee= 0.30
1 x Misc. costs (software, etc.)=0.50
1 x Heartland contribution= 0.50

This is a rough estimate. The last item would basically be an amount that could go toward the running of this thing. Not sure how Barry feels about this so if he could drop me a line about it then that would be great. Any further comments on this much appreciated.

Jewel case? Jiffy bag? Postage? It all racks up.

The Jewel case comes with the disc. Postage/packaging is always additional to eBay transactions. Probably £1 for the UK/RoI, £1.50 for the rest of Europe. £2.00 rest of the world. Does this sound reasonable?

so it gets worse - you can only play an acetate a few times before it completely degrates, add to that the ropey sound you're getting in the first place - what a bargain. I've only ever heard of such things in Led Zeppelin collecting circles, before now.

Or you could go for the cheap option?

1 x CDR = 30p
1 x Plastic Sleve = 25p (ish) from blankdisc shop
1 x Ebay fee = 30p
1 x Colour insert = £ 1

All comes to about £2 (at the most).

Only a thought. :D

Certainly an idea. Like to use high grade CD's though (TDK). And I've had discs break when they were sent out in a plastic sleeve. The artwork is a little bit of an indulgance I admit. ;)

Btw. case in point: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... gory=21726

As someone who lacks the brains or kit to do the weeding thing I think this is a great idea. I've bought a few off The Happening too for a fiver a go & thought it very fair, especially as they were of shows I particularly enjoyed. I do get a bit annoyed when people auction 'rare' bootlegs on CD- anyone (except me obviously!) can make a more or less identical copy so how rare can they be?

Still no-one's forced to part with their money so it's their business I suppose.

Take the plunge, you can pick up a cd writer for about 25-30 quid pretty much anywhere!

It's more that I am too dumb to do it...especially to the intimidating quality of sleevenotes etc that I've seen other people do...

I get the fear really bad when machines fight back. When my dvd player wasn't installed properly I nearly had a nervous breakdown, luckily I have a fearless flatmate who sorted it.

Sad but true.

Well, buy one and get your flatmate to set it up! :D
Don't worry about the inlays, they come with practise!
