It's just a shame there's no open dir on the Sisters official site. Imagine stumbling onto some new songs or a download of the mythical DVD that we'll never see. :D

Nineteen Ninety Five And Nowhere

The story goes something like this :

In early 1995 I was out in Leeds for the night and bumped into a friend of a friend who was working for the Sisters. We got chatting over one or two drinks and during the conversation I expressed my frustration at Eldritch's inactivity - a sentiment which clearly struck a chord with said employee.
I didn't think any more of it until a couple of days later when I got a call from Andrew - I hadn't spoken to him for at least nine years prior to the call. He told me how the word had got back to him that I was keen to work with him again and we discussed on what terms this might happen. He seemed to think I was interested in playing live which I wasn't. I didn't wish to go in the studio with him either, I simply wanted to write some new songs with him so it wasn't an eternity before his next album came out.
I didn't know any of this -- thanks. It's all very interesting.

It puts a different spin on the Sisters history for me. I thought that after the comparative failure of VT to conquer America, an attempt not helped by the abortive PE tour and the well-documented rubbishness of the record company, that Von pursued other interests and kept the band on something of a backburner.

This is a glimpse of another version, where he's casting around for inspiration, writing painfully slowly, soliciting material from former band members and it seems more like the actions of a desperate man who's lost his muse. Not quite the invincible Von of legend (which was mostly, it has to be said, his own legend).

I'm sure he'd have a different version of the story to Marx's, but the very fact that such conversation took place recasts Eldritch in my mind from the heroic figure striding across his own musical landscape with never a backward glance, to someone far less assured.

Hm.

1995 was also a low point for Von and the band...or whatever band there even was. They were 'on strike', and weren't even playing live. I'm not surprised he looked into the Marx thing. I'm also not surprised he didn't bother to do anything with it. God forbid someone else should write songs(!)

Sad to think that 1997, when the 'strike' ended was seven years ago, as long as the strike.

What kind of band doesn't want to secure a record deal of any type?

i've just tried it and it works fine - which options did you try?

i joined the discount scheme and all was fine

i added the two "discount" cds to my basket and checked out (but cancelled befpore actually paying) and all was fine

i added the two full price cds (ie: non-discount versions) to my basket and checked out (but cancelled befpore actually paying) and all was fine

try it now - he might have still been playing around :?:

absolutely. My fond imagining though was that this all part of the 'masterplan', you know what I mean? Coolly withholding material, waiting for record companies to come to his door, then leaving music behind to pursue suitably esoteric leanings.

It's a bit feet of clay to find out he was in reality phoning someone he dumped years previously to ask if he could knock him up an album.

Maybe I should live in blissful ignorance and never come back to this forum... it's just that it's so... interesting. But I can give it up any time... nnnn one more browse.... oo I didn't know that... ;-)

There is no more 'master plan'. It was implemented and done, nothing left to do. Band, no band, wrestle control of band name, put out great album, get new band, record another album, tour, record company problems, touring. I think the 'plan' was wrapped up a long while ago. Now it's 'flirt with idea of being bothered with band'.

Did anyone feel odd ordering up the Marx disc, thinking, wow, this is the only new Sisters product we're likely to get? Looking forward to it, though. He did create The Sisters, after all.

Think Von still has his 'free' copy?

Just ordered it, strangely, I don't seem to have pay any P&P!? Total Sum £10.99!? Or will they withdraw it later?

It doesn't matter really, I'm just happy there's a new release with the "head-without star" logo put on it. ;)

Black Eyed Faith is my immediate first-day favourite - maybe it's because this is probably closest to 1985 FALAA Marx compositions. It's just those wonderful guitar lines again, mixed with a sing-along chorus.

Altogether now: "Dig down, deep down through the wreckage..."

:)

I've got it ordered. With a bit of luck it might be waiting for me when I get home.

Received 1995 and nowhere today....excellent, and about as close as we will get for the foreseable future to anything like a Sisters release.... a must for all Sisters fans. Black eyed faith is a killer song, and would have sounded great in a parallel universe with the full on Sisters sound.
I think Gary deserves our support, and its great that he has flicked the v's at eldritch, and released the tracks himself.
I look forward to future gems... good luck Gary!
