Someone else who has XP help me out here. How big should the windows folder be, I'm guessing around 1gb, definitely no more than 2gb?
Program files, 1gb maximum unless you've installed a ridiculous amount of progs.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to remove them outside of add/remove programs. Right clicking doesn't work either.
XP won't let you delete files? Crazy. Again Quiffy help us out here. Surely it's not so hard to make XP delete a file? I'd have thought rightclick and select delete would do the trick. Even if it warns you against it I'd still have thought there was an override "screw you windows, delete it anyway" button.

you wont be able to delete admin folders because you wont be the admin...
do you have a "C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings" folder? try that...

When I click on properties/General there is no temporary internet files. The only options I'm given is Attributes: Read-Only - Hidden - Archive.

1. Left click 'start'
2. Hover your mouse over settings and it should show you 'control panel' on the right.
3. Double left click on 'control panel'
4. Double left click on 'internet settings'

So we've established an XP installation is around 2gb. Add another very generous 1gb for program files and another extremely generous 1gb for all the horrendous service packs and we still have 4gb unaccounted for.
All I can think of is you mentioned a digital camera. Imaging software sometimes likes to convert images to .tif files. Each picture is around 7mb. Maybe once you delete temp files you might free up some of that?
System restore?
Reinstall?

Control Panel still won't stay open long enough for me to click on anything.

Except that I upload the pics to a photo hosting site then delete them from my comp to save space.

open my computer and click tools --> folder options --> the "VIEW" tab
tick "show hidden folders & files" and untick "hide protected operating system files"
the 2nd option will show you a warning, just "ok" that. you can always turn hiding back on afterwards if needs be.
then have a look at C:\Documents and Settings
working through each "user" folder in there (eg: Administrator, All Users, Default User, your username) go to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings
see anything now?

Stating the obvious and no offence meant but if you've got HL open and you're following the above are you sure Control Panel isn't just minimizing down on your lower task bar ..?l

Well I'm not that computer illiterate.
And yes, I'm sure. Heartland being open doesn't affect any of that because I have to minimize AOL to get into the start menu anyway (the lower task bar is always up on my desktop).

I was afraid of that. Not because of the work it will take to back everything up, but because I'm fairly certain I'll never figure out how to get it running again.

When we first got this computer I couldn't get it to work. After smacking it with a spatula proved fruitless my husband suggested I try the same thing.

i've finished work for the day, but the 10 foot pole is still close at hand. and it's quite a good feeling to tell people they need to reinstall
