Yes. We'll all on a LAN here at work and and as I can't see any nakedness (I'll be diplomatic about the lard ...) I'll go with the same room theory.

Aye. Basically, you bring your computer into a large room, connect it with cables (or wi/fi if yoor posh like) to other computers to form a network. It's called a LOCAL Area Network because you're geographically close to each other. Conversely, the Internet is a WIDE Area Network - WAN - because it's spread across the entire planet.
