"Dave McCullough from Sounds: "The very appearance of them must have blown nobody headliners Sisters Of Mercy off stage"."
er....
Leaving aside Sisters fandom-ness, would they have been blown away?

The Smiths supported them at Brixton Ace 29.6.83 and a video exists of around 4 songs. I haven't got it and don't know where to get it before anyone bombards me with pm's.

The Smiths.. *shudder*
Vaguely good instrument playing, but Morrissey's voice and lyrics makes me want to kill myself. And many other people at the same time.

the music press loved them (the smiths)because they were "wacky" enough to be different (daffodils up arsehole etc) and accessible enough for the masses whilst being non-threatening in any kind of rock'n'roll way ("i'ld rather have a cup of tea than a shag") but mostly 'cause they would play the stupid games and answer the stupid questions that the media asked of them.

Not to mention they made some very fine records, or am I in a minority on that then?

Nope, The Smiths are great. I'm not much for the cult of Morrissey but he can write a brilliant lyric.

Thankls for all the replies/links folks.

Re: - Brilliant
I vaguely remember seeing them on the Tube in the mid 80's. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that they included Youth from Killing Joke & a black female vocalist.

certainly did. jimmy cauty was also in them
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Cauty
In 1984, Cauty took on guitarist duties with Brilliant, a pop trio in collaboration with singer June Montana and Killing Joke bassist Youth. (Youth said he "cut the original ten (or so) members of the band down to just him, June (Montana) and Jimmy...") Brilliant signed with WEA, where Jimmy first met Bill Drummond.
a band called "brilliant" also have atrack on the batcave album - "coming up for the downstroke" or somesuch. not sure its the same pre-cauty band though
could be as youth had some batcave-scen connections IIRC.

I've got a record called "The Whip" dating from 82/83, which also seems to have a very bat-cavey line-up, including Brilliant. "Yoof" is credited with bass/keyboards.
Probably same band then.

what where they like? shiney happy pop dross
pre-stock aitkin & waterman nonsense really
very "pop" circa 1984 and pretty forgettable, judging by the 4 tracks i have on various singles, videos etc
presumably it was their stab at being "famous" and in the charts?

When Ghost Dance played upstairs at the "Last Night of the Clarendon" Brilliant played the same night but downstairs, interesting huh!

Saw Brilliant once, at the s**t that was the Batcave I think (Gossips, Dean st, Soho). Lots of bass guitar & very little else. Bollocks.
Have a radio session somewhere but f**k knows where.
Gun Club though, NOW WE'RE TALKING
Got an old ticket from 83? signed on the back "welcome to Miami - Jeffrey Lee Pierce " & he drew a s**t flower next to it. Superb live band in the early days, what rock n roll is all about. Shame he f**ked it all up later on.
BTW, anyone else like The Scientists ? Supported SOM on the 85 tour. Very Birthday partyesque. Had a cd compilation out a couple of years back. Worth getting.

Missed the scientists on the sisters dates but saw them support Siouxsie the same year and wasn't impressed, a swift exit was made back to the bar.
