Many years ago I was working at a press agency in Bishop Auckland, where one of my tasks was compiling the local junior swimming results. It was a glamourous job, as I'm sure you can imagine.
But there was a family called Fawkes who had several swimmers at Billingham Forum club. Their younger son, rather unfortunately, was called Guy.
There should be a law against that sort of thing.

Indeed.
And November 5th is a convenient time for your Samhain bonfires to be disguised as "let's burn the traitor in effigy" bonfires, especially during James I's puritanical reign.

have you ever taken a moment to contemplate what a metric ton of gunpowder would have done to the streets of 17th century westminster? i suspect the result had fawkes and co succeeded would have been a little more than a dead king.

Did you watch that thing with Richard Hammond where he attempted to answer the question
what would have happened if the gunpowder plot had succeeded?
The answer seemed to be
there would have been a bloody big bang.

They went through a hell of a lot of hassle just to work that one out.
I coulda told 'em.

I was at least expecting some "alternative history" kind of speculation; with King James dead, there's the possibility that the English Civil war might never have happened, a "what if" on more of a historical scope than they actually did.

That's the feller. He also does some "science" show on one of the satellite channels. From what I remember of it, the "science" tends to consist of a) blowing things up, b) setting things on fire, c) getting people drunk and d) making people sick.
This item on his CV presumably qualified him for the program about the gunpowder plot.

Juvenile detention centres are full of our greatest scientists, then....

Well, satellite TV. What do they say? Hundred more opportunities to see the same old trash. 'Science', psh.
As B says, that makes most people with an ASBO a qualified scientist. I've done all of those things, and I haven't heard so much as a peep from Los Alamos or JPL.
