what's the best gig you've ever been to?¿?¿?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

the m****n - newcastle city hall, i didn't go for obvious reasons (i.e. the m****n are nothing more than splitters really !!! lol) but i missed hussey throwing his guitar down and storming off stage coz certain sections of the 'horrible nasty dirty' crowd kept singing 'your not andrew eldritch' and requesting just about every & any song the sisters had recorded up to that date (i.e. incl floodland stuff, tracks from gift (again, more funny if you know the history, certain really nasty members where doing the '2 5 0 0 0' intro bit!!) etc etc, and yet more people doing the 'oooooh look, there goes the deadwood' and pointing etc etc (newcastle was always on the sisters side of the sisters / m****n divide).
Which year? My first ever gig was the aforementioned, but in 1990 (I was 15 years old, and was "escorted" by big sista Schwirl  ).

My second gig was actually this one (just turned 16, four months later, so it was my b'day pressie, went with big sista schwirl and iccle bwuva booka - yep! the whole smith family was at this one :D )
the nephs - middlesborough city hall. i didn't get to this one (can't remember why, i'll have to ask someone!). anyway, as you know, the nephs are probably the only band to outdo the sisters on the whole 'opera' of the goth gig thing. imagine the scene, the smoke/dry ice machines have been going for the last 40-50 mins, the intro tape (gregorian chanting, strange noises, music fading in & out, etc etc, you know the thing!) has been playing for the last 20 mins (pulse starting to rise a little). for the last 2 or 3 mins you can see shapes in the dry ice (heart beating faster, hairs on the back of the neck starting to rise). ok, yes!!! this is it, the drums kick in, the first chord is played, carl looms out of the smoke like a god and, and, the entire sound cuts out, the sprinkler system cuts in and everyone is escorted outside the building for 45 mins while they make sure it isn't really on fire. apparently the gig was a little 'flat' after that!!!

Enjoyed it a lot more than Newcastle (The Mi***on are pu***es!) Don't remember being escorted out, as 5 mins after the incident they were back on stage "giving it serious", saw a smile on Carl's face when everything cut out ("time for a quick beer!" :?: )

3rd Gig over a year later was Nirvana at Newcastle Mayfair, great support bands - Captain America (ex Vaselines) and Shonen Knife 8) :D

Finally saw Sisters a coupla weeks ago at the Barrowlands - thoroughly loved it and it is Best gig i've ever been to!

Got to say the last Leeds Sisters shows were very special - the music was good, however the whole feeling and friendliness of the crowd made it more than anything...

Vague memories of Motorhead at the good old (and now ripped down) Glasgow Apollo too....

Saw AC/DC there with Bon Scott too as a young lad which kind of started it all off I guess ...... :D

My first ever gig was 22 Mar 1981 at the F club in Leeds.
Only went there for a few beers, ended up being highly irritated by the racket made from these 3 goth muppets on the F club's tiny stage.
Didn't catch their name.

Best ever gig? Skunk Anansie (don't laugh) at Manchester Academy, 97ish. The atmosphere was ELECTRIC, the band were genuinely hilarious (in a good way), the lead singer, Skin, kept crowdsurfing, while playing this HUGE guitar at the same time... quite a feat.

Worst gig? Motorhead at the Manchester Apollo in '95.

Now, I know what you're thinking, and I love Motorhead too, but the atmosphere at this gig was rubbish- bizarrely sparse crowd (just me, my two mates and about 150 bikers), everyone just stood rooted to the spot.
I love the band, but it felt like I was watching them on telly.
Lemmy is god, though.

Oh, and the crazyest gig ever was Sepultura at the Apollo in '97ish (my memory's a bit hazy)
Absolute madness from start to finish, it was a real shame when Max Cavalera left

Some favourites of mine

Alien Sex Fiend at the Edinburgh Venue sometime around 1987.

Flesh for Lulu at the Edinburgh Venue the same year.

Ghostdance at Glasgow Rooftops the same year.

Zodiac Mindwarp at Edinburgh Coasters the same year (what a good year for gigs!)

Photos from the above can be seen at http://community.webshots.com/album/54083174LudDHm

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers at Glasgow Rooftops, might be 1987 again :)

The Prodigy at T in the Park 1998 - blew me away, never really liked them before that gig - amazing lightshow.

Oasis at the Glasgow Barrowlands 1994 - before the world knew who they were and they lost the plot.

Jesus & Mary Chain at the Glasgow Barrowlands 1988 - under par performance from the brothers Reid but they were heroes of mine at the time. Psychocandy is still THE best album ever recorded IMO.

AC/DC at the Edinburgh Playhouse in 1982 - my first gig!

Motorhead at the Edinburgh Playhouse sometime around 1984.

The Ramones at the Edinburgh Playhouse - 1985-ish.....and I thought Motorhead were loud! Jeez this was PAINFULLY loud. Great gig though.

....and last but by no means least....The Sisters at Glasgow Barrowlands 2003 - yes it really was that good. This gig is up there with the best of them....anyone got a bootleg of it?

Sisters : The Forum 1998 - Everyone was having a good time, and a great atmosphere.

Other gig : Rolf Harris - Glastonbury 98 I am sure this was very very good, but then again, I was very very drunk...
The support band for Poison Idea in 93 or 94 at The Pitz Milton Keynes. I was very impressed with the 3 bassist, 7 drummer line up. They were very loud and most of the gig was made up of feedback. They are the main reason that my hearing is slightly screwed in my left ear. Fantastic gig

a selection of my faves from over the years:

The Nephilim - Cambridge Corn Exchange, Sept 1988 (my first proper gig - my ears were ringing for days afterwards!)

Wonderstuff - Brixton Academy, Nov 1989 (before the 'Bass Thing' left and they went all "fiddly".)

The Macc Lads + Eddie Sh*t - London Marquee, March 1990 (total anarchy from start to finish, with lots of spitting & pints of p*ss being hurled at the stage. This was my brother's first proper gig - he just stood there in a state of shock throughout - bless him!)

Sisters / Nirvana / Iggy Pop / Sonic Youth etc - Reading Festival 1991 (probably the best festival line-up ever?)

The Cure - Kilburn National Ballroom, May 1992 (part of a small club tour - fabulous gig!)

Metallica - Milton Keynes Bowl, June 1993 (before they all had their hair cut short and basically turned into Oasis.)

Nine Inch Nails - Wolves Civic Hall, May 1994

Killing Joke - London Forum, Oct 1994 (a new album is due out this summer - should be good)

Sisters + Sex Pistols - Munich, June 1996 (total rock & roll!)

Motorhead - Leeds Town & Country Club, 1998 (really loud!)

Black Sabbath - London Astoria, Dec 1999 (really rocked!)

Numan - Shepherd's Bush Empire, Sept 2001

The Cure / Missi*n - Zillo Festival, July 2002

Guns & Roses / Prodigy / Jane's Addiction - Leeds Festy, Aug 2002

and... Sisters - London Forum, April 2003 (the second night was stonking!)

The only thing is I'm not really into trading. I have a good few Sisters bootlegs (mp3s only) but nothing that the serious traders wont already have. The stuff I have includes:

1985-03-09 Glasgow
Echoes (3 disc)
Enjoy the Puppet Show
M'era Luna Festival, Hildesheim, Germany 2000
Napalm Gods
Temple Of Rarities
Trans-Europe Excess
Ultra Rare Trax

(just in case anyone is interested)

The only other thing I could offer as a trade is a home made DVD-R consisting of Wake, Shot, and the promo videos for Black Planet and Walk Away.

Godhead acoustic gig at the Highland Grounds in Hollywood, California last Saturday 3rd May 2003.

Absolutely amazing - did a cracking acoustic version of Space Oddity.

Best thing was the aftershow party at Godhead's house - didn't leave until 7am Sunday morning. One helluva way of getting over jet lag though :D

Good question, I should've got round to reading this general stuff sooner. Right, fave gigs, which certainly follow a trend here...

Jane's Addiction - Sheffield Leadmill 89 (I think) - what a corker.

The Neph - Leeds Uni 90/91/92 (not sure which) - The Elyzium tour, which is far and away their best album - top show, normally they were a bit naff live.

Sisters - Leeds Poly 91 - first Sisters gig - and what a way to start.

Jane's Addiction - Manchester International 2 91 (I think) - what a corker - and bumped into Perry Farrell in the city centre at about 3AM, which was nice, once my girlfriend of the time had stopped trying to shag him.

Ian McNabb - Leeds Irish Centre - 91 or 92 - played for about three and a half hours - loads of Icicle Works stuff - top.

Sisters - NEC 92 - words fail me. Still.

The Cure - Bradford St Georges Hall - 91 or 92 - like seeing them in your living room.

Utah Saints - Leeds T&C 92 or 93 - supported The Shamen (oh dear), and needless to say kicked their asses, with bells on.

Sisters / DM - CP 93 - top day out, even though DM had turned into The Cult.

U2 - Roundhay Park 93 - The Lights, The Lights!

PJ Harvey - Leeds Duchess Of York (92 or 93) - close enough to smell her. Sigh.

Iggy Pop - Leeds T&C 93 - what a God!

Oasis - Maine Rd (second show) 95 or 96 - although they'd already started to lose it, twas an ace day.

Metallica - Sheffield Arena 95 - cunning stunts indeed. Awesome.

The Cult - Bradford St Georges Hall 95 - like the last two albums never happened - top.

Prodigy - T in the Park 96 (I think) - in broad daylight - mad as toast, and I was hooked.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Manchester Apollo 95 or 96 - staggering, with an amazing bald geezer as support, who turned out to be Moby. The best support gig ever, followed by the Peppers - on stage in maid's outfits and straight into Give It Away. Beat that.

Sisters - Manchester Apollo 97 - oh no, sorry, that one was s**t.

Iggy Pop - Leeds V97 or V98 - mid afternoon slot, wiped the floor with everything else.

Sisters - Forum (2) 98 - more like it - what a stonking show.

Moby - Glastonbury 98 - he can do no wrong.

Motorhead - Leeds T&C 98 - yep, the ears definitely bled.

REM - Glastonbury 99 - right up there with the best shows ever.

Apoptygma Berzerk - Eurorock 2000 - another staggering festival discovery.

Leftfield - Leeds T&C 2000 - matched Motorhead for volume!

Sisters - Leeds Uni 2001 - even better than NEC 92.

White Stripes - Sheffield Leadmill 01 or 02 - Bloody hell! How do they manage to make such a racket.

Guns N Roses - Leeds Festival 02 - Christ, I didn't expect that! They'd been s**t in 92 and 93. Cap doffed.

Jane's Addiction / White Stripes - Leeds Festival 02 - the best Saturday afternoon since Sisters at CP 93!

And finally, Sisters - Dam & Leeds (Sat) 03 - may they never lose 'the stonk'.

And I thoroughly expect REM at Move (Manchester), and 'tallica & SOAD at Leeds Fest to join this list in due course.

My Bloody valentine, DeMontfort University 1991 on the Loveless tour. The most ear shatteringly loud gig I've ver been to, including THAT bit in the middle of You Made Me Realise, where you dont know if you're going to faint or not.

The Cure 1989, Birmingham NEC, Prayer Tour, they did a 20 minute version of Faith.

Worse gigs, probably The m*****n and the dreaded Wonderstuff (both at Reading), although a Carter USM gig runs those two pretty close

Half Man Half Biscuit - Planet X, Liverpool 1990.

Been waiting 4 years to see the biscuits then they announce a one off gig at the Planet. Totally wedged with at least double the number of people in who should have been allowed. Must have been about 50 tranmere fans in that night as well. Greatest gig I've been to.

Sisters - 24/11/90 Wembley.

Great day, great gig. Tranmere away at Fulham in the afternoon followed by our 1st Sisters gig. I also arranged for the overnight Euston to Liverpool train to be stopped at Wembley Central to pick up the large amount of people attending the gig from the North West. Well us 2 anyway.

Rosetta Stone 92 tour.

We done Brighton, Winsdor, Leicester, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and Runcorn on this tour. Great 2 weeks.

Macc Lads - Royal Court 89-90ish.

This gig was the one they released on video. What a mad night that was. If you get to watch the video when Mutley gets a cup of p*ss thrown over him then says "Iam Mutley...the wet" then that was a excellent shot from my mate standing next to me. Mad.

Carter USM - Woolton College of Higher Education.

This gig sold out within hours. Had to buy tickets from scummy touts outside. Waited outside the venue for 2 hours as the power inside kept tripping out. Once inside the gig was great. No bands have ever played there since.

Bunnymen

Any gig i've been to has been good. This includes Echo & The Bogusmen at Bootle Marsh Lane Community Centre 89. The KLF came on to do "What time is love.

Zodiac Mindwarp / tigertailz / robin black and the intergalactic rockstars - last december - sheff corporation

UK subs/ The Vibrators -April 2003 - Sheff casbah

Half man half biscuit/ghost of lemora - march 2004 (i think) - sheff boardwalk and casbah (to clarifty, i saw the biscuits, then rushed up to the casbah to see ghost of lemora. should prolly count as 2 gigs, but since they were on the same night.... i also accidentally dragged some rather confused biscuits fans to the casbah with me - they followed me 'cos they had nowhere better to go and seemed a bit shaken when they realised they'd ened up in sheff's grottiest goff night )

The Cure - trilogy gigs - Berlin (especially the first night)

Gotham 4 - 2003 - camden palace (i think...)
(fab lineup - descendents of cain, ghost of lemora, psychophile, mechanical cabaret and the damned. and this remains THE best damned gig i've been to. they overran their set, but refused to leave the stage. the crew cme on and started dismantleing and unplugging their equipment while they kept playing - fantastic!)

The damned/bleeding hearts - august 2003(i think) - stourbridge rock cafe
(the whole of the damned messageboard got together for this one. Bleeding hearts were FANTASTIC and the damned completely failed to dissapoint.)

Skeletal family/Killing Joke - october/november (can't remember) 2003 - sheff leadmill
(i feared for my life at that one...)

The Wildhearts/Therapy? - may 2004 - hammersmith palais

Dark city festival - december 2003 - sheff casbah
(Screaming banshee aircrew, the way of all flesh, 3ulogy and pro jekt - fantastic gig!)
