The Marching Men - First Gig

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

The vocals or the guitars? All constructive criticism is welcomed and appreciated. Wink
I think I'd just repeat myself since I already posted this:

Band sound tighter, Tim's shirt is fantastic, but the vocals are still erm...interesting, pitch-wise. Setlist looks great. Definitely an improvement from the last vid. Good work, guys !
How about a live streaming of a Marching Men gig (or rehearsal) for HLers for Sisters Day (16th Feb) ??

I thought the end with the backing vocals sounded pretty accurate :)

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder :D

Tim's getting better each rehearsal as he gains more confidence. I've got a plan to help him improve further (yes, it does involve cattle prods, but we've a while to go before I'll them  ).

The main problem with the vocals is that only Eldritch sounds like Eldritch, all anyone else can do is get close enough. Tim doesn't smoke, so that particular rough timbre (Johnny Cash is the best example of that kind of rough drawl I can think of) will never be there. Then there's Andrew's accent; he's got a fairly neutral English accent, whereas Tim's is a soft East Yorkshire and it shows on the vowel sounds.

If you listen to live recordings, from the very beginning, it's clear Andrew really can't sing. But he gets close enough and has a very distinctive voice, which is why he stood out in the first place. There's a bit on one of the interview picture discs from around the release of Floodland, where Andrew states that he tone deaf and can't sing, but is/was getting better at hiding it.

@robertzombie: Cheers man :notworthy:
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

Of all the vids Logic's the one where I f*cked up at the start!

So ill (as the band will testify) I forgot where I was for a minute.

"Fairly neutral" = Southern English I presume. He always sang an "r" in the "last" of FALAA and sounds the "u" in "just" more like an "a" in "names are just for souvenirs."

Just as well :von: didn't spend his entire childhood in Ely or else we'd have had "Come here I think you're bootiful" in the same song.

Yeah I agree, Eldritch has an almost "Estuary-English" accent to my ears, certainly not what I'd call neutral ("BBC English" or "received pronunciation").

I am indeed. Thankyou. :P

I do seem to have passed it onto our drum machine however, though bodily fluids weren't involved.

As the picture demonstrates. I most certainly could.

Aside from that, if you Google Image "Andrew Eldritch 2012" our fine leader Mr Sinister appears on page 1! We must be doing something right! Or Sh*te. Whichever.

The machine grinds on - we're playing Santiagos Bar in Leeds on May 13th, and then the Polish Club in Barnsley (our first expedition to the 'other' People's Republic) on June 17th.

We've signed a mutual assistance pact with UK Cult, a superb tribute act to The Cult so expect both barrels of the experience in June.

Very short notice, but we've been asked to support Rammstein tribute Morderstein in Bradford tomorrow night at Rios.

Times, costs and anything else you might want to know are of course, a carefully guarded secret which the promoter is disinclined to release.
