Liking Damage Done is OK though. It holds up surprisingly well after all this time, a rather groovy trashy garage song.

what kind of conspiracy is this? are you trying to change my opinion? :)

Let me describe Burn. The way I see it. Then it's your turn, describe it the way you see it.

Burn:
Eldritch's voice is too inaudible, too vague
There ain't a hit-up part, a suddenly exciting part
There's some strange gibberish in between which I can't understand
It's monotone
It's the same rythm during much of the song (I dont specifically dislike that)
EDIT: the lyrics are monotone aswell, 4x the same?

ok, now show me why I should love Burn...

Play it backwards. The gibberish will all become clear.

Or better yet, get the chance (or give yourself the chance) to listen to it in the full context of the Reptile House EP.

I heard something about the Reptile House being the Parliament... now if that's why you're all so excited about Burn, this is my response :|

I'm not from Great Britain myself, so that might explain a few things... If you all like the parliament getting burned down, that's not kind amy thing :P

I ain't from GB either, and nor is Iz, but it's not about the lyrics or the message, Burn is all about the mood and the atmosphere. It's the come-down (or the final slap-about-the-head) after the previous 20 odd minutes of crawling horror.

The monotone, or lack of any sudden exciting bits, is quite intentional.

tell me the order of songs on that EP and I'll make a playlist on my WindowsMediaPlayer. MUHAHAHAHHAAHAAA (says the evil abuser of poor innocent sisters' mp3 song files downloaded from the worldwideweb)

hmm that clarifies it, I have neither Fix nor Lights nor Kiss the Carpet, only Valentine, Burn and the reprise (30 sec?! wtf)...so I guess I havent really got the atmosphere yet. Liked hearing the razor in action though, in Valentine.

guess I gotta put a few songs in a "never listened to before" folder, or I'm gonna hate myself for already knowing all songs before I've really gotten the feeling :P

I hated the Reptile house EP with a passion on first listen.

Give it time, give it patience. Read it with the lyrics so you are forced to concentrate. It will reveal itself to you.

Its about a 20 minute walk from my house to the station.
I listen to the full EP while walking home in the dark, and in the rain and in the cold.

Freezing and drenched and heading towards the traffic lights, it was a moment of pure and utter clarity. Lights become one of my most hated sisters tracks to one of my faves.

It does take a bit of getting used to alright, so maybe it's not the best recommendation for a newcomer. But once it hits you, boy does it hit you. It's like nothing they've done before or since, but is still one of those career/genre defining records that only comes along once every few years.

I could be persuaded to do a Share of the main 5 tracks (performed live)...

"Where the emerald glistens through the rain...."

I had a similar experience while walking around Middlesborough, near the Transporter Bridge and the ICI chemical plant. It all suddenly made perfect sense. Although I'll probably never be able to put The Reptile House into words that make any sense to anyone other than myself, it's one of the most astute observations on what it was like in the 1980's in an industrial town/city in the North of England.
