The sad thing is that amongst my "social" circle, not only can we quote that song verbatim, but we can also end up in long heated debates about whether or not drinking someone else under the table brings happiness to the greatest number or if inebriation is categorically imperative :|

Your friends are weird.

Give them some whiskey and tell them to work it out for themselves. By the next day they'll be normal teenagers.

Cheers boss, at least I know there are some humans among us.

Once again I abandon the Heartland Massif (in a twatty styleewwwww)

"it's just music"

You're quite right, that's why we all follow Robbie Williams round the planet with a kit-bag and no cash for no apparant reason.

Bollox, The sissies were never just "music" and they never will be, judged on purely "musical" merits they are frankly, s**t, judged on every other scale they are the dogs bollocks+100%.

After 14 years and 9 countries worth of sissies gigs, I think I've worked out that they may be the finest band ever seen, but they have an almost always attracted every type of twit available.

Most of you know you're not included in that vile generalisation, unless you have cobwebs on your face, then I'd count yourself in.

Read "works of love", listen to "Psychadelic warlords dissapear in smoke".

and if you still don't get it,

go see the mish, they're very approachable, and they write a "good" tune, that's what's important. RIGHT!!

You're pulling my chain surely.

Christ on a unicycle! Its us goths that are supposed to take ourselves too seriously.

It IS just music,f**king brilliant atmospheric music up until Vision thing(Then it was s**t I'll grant you). Its not philosophy or brilliant poetry or realpolitik or whatever. The sisters of mercy were the best at what they did-Post punk alternative rock music with intriguing lyrics.

I'd prefer to listen to "Orgone accumulator" if we're off down the Hawkwind route.Bob Calvert-now there was a poet.

I'll agree with you.

I don't care how many references to any poet or overrated playwright or whoever he decides to add to his lyrics, if they can't bang out a good few tunes, then I don't want to know.

And the 'just music' thing works for RH but only if you mean 'barely music'..

They can still cut the mustard live though and Alan Davey does a f**king good Lemmy impression.Mind you its the pre Lemmy split material that gets the crowd going.Even Dave "The dustman"Brock admits sacking Snaggletooth was the worst thing they ever did.

s**t guitar playing sounds dissonant to anyone with a passing interest in music.

s**t lyrics sound dissonant to anyone with a passing interest in language or philosophy.

A personal like or dislike for cryptic, well constructed lyrics is neither here nor there when assessing what other people care about. I'm sure the vast majority of us have no desire to f**k Andrew, but it doesn't make the hordes of middle aged goth women wrong to do so.

If the discussion's headed towards lyrical analysis, don't get combatitive, just start a tangent relating to the melodic merits.

I never understood why people so vehemently reject the idea of Von's lyrics being so steeped in mystery. There are valid cases for both sides, but the man's facade speaks for itself - if the lyrics are bollocks, then it'll be as a satirical device, not "because they sounded good".

Finding the tunes catchy is all well and good, but proves nothing about the intent behind the music, which has been well documented in countless interviews over countless years. It's like a magic eye puzzle. Some people will find the pictures pretty at face value. However, for those who want to look deeper, Andrew's presented an intricate 3 dimensional image below the surface. That's why what he does works - it'll appeal to the casual listener, but provides greater depth for anyone wanting further substance.

What a shallow person I must be then.
Eldritch's lyrics work with the music,in the same way McCoy's lyrics work with the Nephilim's music-Part of the bands sound. Both write abstract lyrics that can be interpreted anyway you choose to.If you want to look at them as fine art, good luck.I choose not to.

Whatever. Anyone can make references to whatever they want to, but if the song itself doesn't sound good, then I'm not going to listen to it. Simple as that.

A valid point indeed. This is where the subjective nature of any artform comes in. What you may consider a good tune, others may take the opposite road.

What marks The Sisters above and beyond the competition, is that the synthesis between words and music makes sense. When it comes to the vast majority of g*** bands (not that The Sisters are a g*** band) and their songs, there is a distinct lack of any kind of intellect within the lyrics. Vapid would be the best description I can think of.

As Von keeps saying in interviews, the music is the vehicle for the words and they have to fit together or they won't work. Von also relies on subtlely and the superb use (and abuse) of metaphor. From Von's perspective, the words hold more value than the music. It's why he refused to sing any of the lyrics written by Hussey, there was no depth to them or any kind of discernable meaning that he (Von) could ellict from them.

Which is no reason to denounce looking beyond the surface of the lyrics, which is what is pissing me off in the first place. If someone doesn't want to discuss it, fine, but rubbishing the idea reading any deeper is completely tangential to the topic. :urff:

Best thing they did recently was "Ritual of the Solstice".The Advent's Remix/reconstruction of "Sonic attack" is f**king amazing as is Utah saints remix of "Silver machine".
