Do you know of any one community whose members actually agree on absolutely everything ? And is this a reason to keep coming up with the most controversial topics ?

It's been said before : of course you're free to discuss whatever subject you want here - within the limits of reason and the law of course. But why would you ? Do you have to cause divisions (which are far from "natural" IMHO) ? There's a little thing called respect that you may find useful.

What concerns me is this "I can't help but post on this supposed controversial topic " concept. It is as though the woman/man who starts the thread is responsible for everyone else's response.

Perhaps it works something like this....someone decides to read a thread, then says to him/herself, "O.K., I will write this or that.... I will log in, and I state my opinions. All of a sudden, I discover my drinking buddy does not agree with me! Of course, it is that American girl's fault. She created the topic where the disagreement took place. So now I am feeling "righteously indignant" and I decide to tell that obvious trouble-maker to fck-off!! (when she is gone, I will no longer be tricked to participate in her obviously inflammatory threads!!) (evil temptress!)

Is it misogyny, anti-americanism, or just a simple mind-set?? I don't know, only you do. To me it is quite dangerous to see so many supposedly educated people choosing to think in this manner.

I will probably tire of all of this eventually and your scapegoat will be gone. You can be quite sure another one will pop up to replace me because as long as you refuse to take responsiblity for every word you write, every response you have, you will need someone else to blame for your feelings and reactions. As far as I'm concerned, could I just point out that :
- I've never been rude to you, DarkAngel, and I thought that was the best way to make my point clear. I'm not sure anymore ;
- I've hardly taken part in these "controversial" discussions because I thought they were either uninteresting, or useless, or not very well formulated ;
- I am very tired of this and I suppose other people are too. So don't be surprised if some day no one cares to answer your posts anymore, even when they are interesting and up to the point ;
- what surprises me is not just the fact that you've repeatedly made controversial posts, but also the fact that you've so rarely made Sisters-related posts. I mean this is a Sisters discussion forum. Derailments are most frequent and sometimes welcome. But I have the impression you've never seen the rails at all.

Please note : this means in no way that political discussions don't have a place around here. But some poor souls seem to take themselves much too seriously.

While there is some truth in what you've said in your post, I still don't understand your logic, which seems to run along the lines of:

• I am an American woman.
  
  People seem to have a problem with me.
  
  Therefore they must have a problem with me either (1) because I'm American or (2) because I'm a woman.

It doesn't work quite like that.

Nothing wrong with a bit of debate now, but when someone holds a different opinion to you, there's no need to go flinging insults at them for it. We all hold the opinions that we have for a vast number of different reasons, and it seems reasonable to assume that in most cases those reasons will not be so negative as you (seem to) like to paint.

Also, we're a little bit tired of you hitting on Islam all the time. There are other cultures in the world, all of them worthy of discussion.

Besides, as normal well-balanced people, we do like to talk about things other than politics-politics-politics-bloody-politics all day long.

PS: I've disagreed with women before. That doesn't make me a misogynist. I've disagreed with men before. That doesn't make me a man hater. I've disagreed with American, Canadian, English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and so on people, but that doesn't mean I hate people from those countries. All it means is that I have a mind and opinions of my own.

Nothing personal, but this is one of the things that pisses me off. If you're going to make a post (the contents of which I largely agreed with) please have the courage to leave it in place.

What a lot of you have mentioned is that you believe I fling insults about. If you would take the time to reread all of my posts you will find two direct insults in all - for which I take full responsiblility. On the other hand, there have been countless insults made toward me. Why is that? My guess is that many people presume to think they know what I am thinking rather than reading what I write. There are many names for that - I will just call it "controlling behavior."

On an aside, I like the Sisters a lot but I like the political and religous discussions better.

I have found the recent threads started by DarkAngel as annoying as anyone, but that's just because I felt it was being done in an inflammatory way, and almost seemed to be turning into some kind of campaign. I don't however particularly want to see a HL where it's 100% small-talk and bollox, all the time. (Not to say there's no place for that either, the silly stuff is part of what most of us love about the place)

I would like to think we could talk about slightly more weighty issues in a civilised way. I think it's pretty depressing if we have to keep to talking about daft things, not simply because it's fun and we enjoy it, but because otherwise it will descend into sniping and bitching.

I hope we (and I include myself in this) are capable of better than that.

And my tuppence worth - If these debates made any bloody difference or were actually constructive then fair enough, however we can get the depressing stuff 24 hours a day on the TV/Radio/Interweb. Popping in to Heartland and seeing this stuff repeated ad naseum and usually verbatim from somewhere else is just plain bloody tedious.

I appreciate your post Boudicca. For the record, my motivation for creating a thread about politics or religion is to discuss those topics with whoever is willing. Sometimes I learn something new, sometimes my way of looking at the topic is new to others.

Thanks for the "Severely Marvellous" part honey! Yes we have lots of festive activities coming up around these parts but the real hard partying does get done in the Dam as we all should know!

On the subject of partying and the getting together of us "foreign" types...
Obviousman, you and the rest of my belgium boys know you are always welcome here or Jos doesn't mind doing the drive south. Up to you guys really as I think weekends miss each other by a week or something as that Utrecht happening sounds mighty fine if just to see ya all!

Now, now love, don't go scarying the english men like that or tourists to our wonderfully delicious deceitful country, rest assured the red light district is not gone, no longer known that way, but not gone. Our ladies that stand as prostitutes behind the windows are quite stunning and definately have a certain class. The best nights are Friday for those just window shopping. Amsterdam is having 'face-lifts' in certain areas but all very positive in a renovation kind of way. Welcome back again.

Now why was I posting in this thread again? Oh yes, weebies was on about those certain threads, I saw a joint...hee, um, amazing who crawls out the woodwork *ignore that one it's a thought*, and I agree with lots that has been said and IMO the threads about a religion or faith posted by DarkAngel have left me reading a person that is laced with discrimination of races, and who has clearly stated her views of gay people, along with the fact that she insults users without having a clue as to who these people are, bringing me to the conclusion that one who wants so much has shown nothing to offer that interests me as I find it very narrow minded. So in my right I ignore them too.
