And while it's true that, to paraphrase , guitarists are a long way from the front of the stage, it sounds like he's getting rather more fun out of life than maybe you are. What's the problem - certified accountancy not turning out to be the fanny-magnet your careers advisor made it out to be?

I kinda agree. I liked the roughness (if that's the right word) of Pearson/Varjak/Sheehan which is kind of missing with the new mother's boys. That said Catalyst is "bloody nice man".
