I have had a look at each and every person on the pic. I admit I thought it was him.

Very interesting alternatives ...

My memory of viewing this photo in St John's (in the late 80s or early 90s) is that everyone was labelled underneath - name corresponded to position. This is how I was able to identify Boyd Steemson, a man I have never met or previously seen a photo of.

Either I completely messed up all those years ago and mismatched names with faces or AWH Taylor is correctly identified. Look at the mouth. It's him, alright, I maintain.

But please just ignore me, if it's more fun. I know I am! I've been looking at this photo far more closely than ever before and picking my new favourite Eldritch.

Wonder how many of the people on the same course/in the same halls of residence made the connection 10 years later when the guy they (briefly?) went to uni with started showing up regularly on Top of the Pops and on magazine covers.

No Facebook back then, staying in touch with people was much harder work, and the context would have been completely different.

I don't know - even in the days of Facebook and LinkedIn I can't say I make a real effort to keep in touch with someone from my course at Leeds Poly who a few years ago was voted Britain's Top Elvis Impersonator (still wonder how someone with a scouse accent that could rip the Blaupunkt out of a Golf GTi at 50 paces managed to rise to such giddy heights, but there you go).

Not sure how many here follow the TSOM Facebook page (someone had posted the pic there) but somewhat spookily the very day after @Mothra's comment above, a guy on FB revealed that he is on the Matriculation photo too and remembers :von: well. Before anyone complains about breach of privacy and so on, the guy made it clear that he was not going to be supplying any random, misremembered recollections and (as a fan of the band) he felt that TSOM's music does the talking. He had not joined the conversation to disrespect the legend of Eldritch.
What he did say might be of historical interest to some who missed it (and if anyone is offended by the intrusion into pre-Sisters Andrew Taylor's life, please stop reading here) however, and I will summarise it here. :von: wore a "red, all leather outfit - when others in college were still wearing flares" (looking at the photo I can guess the identity of many of the latter group!). He turned up for a College darts match (!) "in full fencing gear" and used to "sit cross legged in his room...playing an acoustic guitar". In response to (respectful) questions from other fans (two of whom are well known in this parish), he confirmed that Andrew Taylor wasn't in a band at Oxford, and erm, he didn't have a poodle. Finally, going back to the earlier discussion on here, he remembered Taylor saying that he was leaving to go to Leeds to study Chinese and Politics.

Thanks to you and the respectful questioners, for being able to give us a glimpse of :von: before he was :von:

Must say, I do hope the guy was wrong about the "red, all leather outfit"!

Some other red clothes were mentioned too... so who knows he may have liked this colour in those years.

Can you put a link to that FB conversation? I'd like to have a look at that. There seem to be several Sisters FB pages.

Yes, I know ... but some part of my brain just won't believe it, because it seems ever so plausible ...  ...
