if you want to go down that "virtual instrument" route there are a few things to consider:

all those extra instruments run in the backgorund and all use additional processing power and memory. you will need a pretty chunky pc to get the most out of it... mine is a p4 1.7 with 1gb of memory. and i need to kill any unneccessary background stuff  :urff:

also, you will need a decent soundcard - one with "asio" drivers.

this is a must both to get a goodquality sound and to avoid "latency" (the time lag between you or cubase telling the vst instrument to play a note and the vst instrument actually playing the note). my old soundcard was a bog-standard "gamer" soundcard and there was a huge lag... i bought an m-audio "audiophile 2496" and that does the trick. they used to be about £90 but have come down recently ;)

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=pro ... interfaces

and then of course you start getting into home-studio stuff, and so you will need decent speakers so that you can hear your mixes. i bought alesis m1 studio monitors... overkill probably but i like them ;)

and then of course you need a mixing de...... aaaargh!

you see? it never ends :urff:

i like my toys ;)

if you wanted to record real instruments and vocals on the computer...do you know anything about that?

i really can recommend cubase sx - latencies are calcualted automatically (i guess this is the main advantage to prior versions) - altough i just have ac97 onboard sound its no problem to record in real time in studio quality (24 bits; p4 1.7 gh 256 ddr) - it does not deserve any special asio drivers - most of the tracks for summer were recorded by microphone without any troubles via line-in - i do use a digitech effect processor as a pre-amp - real electric instruments are just plugged in also

it was a very nice barbecue

I've found a dinky little thing on my Mac called "Garageband" which seems to do (some of) the stuff like this. It might not be entirely (or indeed anywhere near) as good as cubase, but I'll give it a pop.

I'll go at "Slept" as no-one else has volunteered.

You never know, I might even be tempted to put a vocal track on it too.

Who's interpretation of the lyrics will you be going with? Didn't Black Horizon have some theory about Nazis and the army of the Reich?

I think I may go with the "consensus" lyrics rather than BH's. No offence intended ;)

I'm a new boy around these parts, so I thought I'd break the ice by having a go at one of these 'new' tunes.

I've gone for a straight rendition of 'Slept'. Nowt too fancy I'm afraid.

See what you think:

Just out of curiosity....

Are you in any way involved in/connected to the Cooper Temple Clause? :innocent:

IZ.

by Nonesuch
No, I'm I not connected to the Cooper Temple Clause; I just put those videos online for a friend. That was the only place I could put my tune.

Anyway, thanks for giving it a listen.

It turned out alright, although it did take at least twice as long as I’d planned. (Lots of mistakes etc. - I’m out of practice that’s for sure)

If you're interested my music set-up is:

Logic Audio
Reason
Electric & acoustic guitars
POD guitar processor

what a great thread. only sorry i've come to it so late.

is this exclusive or can we try anything ?

who's putting the band together, and where is the BBQ ?

Well, you can do any of the "new" songs if you want. And for some reason we seem to be leaving the vocal part off.

"we are basically self-recording versions of sisters material from the list below"
kind of. we are endevouring to make backing tracks of the new material, to save eldritch the bother. the being that he could then take them and go into a studio and record his vocals over them, with minimal effort. which is how he seems to like it these days ;)
"is this exclusive or can we try anything ?"
its limited to the new material. i think the 3 you listed there were the 3 remaining ones that havent yet been "bagsied". there's no reason why you cant do one of the other new ones though. that way he could choose which he preferred.

(why am i talking like this is actually going to happen? hey ho. )
"who's putting the band together, and where is the BBQ ?"
no band. as yet. and you're as bad as jost7 with your bbq obsession

when we get a couple more in i'll put up a page where you can download them all... :von:

Good man.

Amazing how someone can put together a very very convincing "Slept" in a matter of days, ain't it? Makes ya wonder why Von takes so long...

at the risk of showing myself up as sisters lightweight, where do you get the 'new stuff' from to listen to ?

mind you i'd been worrying why i didn't recognise the track names at first glance, assumed they were obscure demo b-sides or something.
