@ Emily - radio 5 is great, isn't it? I'm also quite generous with housework when there's a decent match on! Sunday 4:05, I will no doubt be cleaning, whilst my beloved team take Man Utd to pieces (hopefully).

@ Quiffy - what is your opinion on fish-eating? I'm never sure or where people's boundaries lie on this. There are a lot of different reasons for being a vegetarian. If it's for health reasons, eating fish was always a good idea, although fish is become more and more risky too. If it's about cruelty to animals, confinement etc, then non-farmed fish is okay, I guess? If it's about us not having the right to eat other animals, I guess I'm screwed.

Trouble is, having experimented quite widely with cooking non-meat-based food I'm forced to conclude that I don't really enjoy the taste of many vegetables. Specifically the green ones.

I can do fantastic things with potatoes (right with you about seasoning mash, but I'd rather set up a gratin, pop in the oven at gas mark 2 before I go to work and dive into the creamy remains on my return). I've even produced some tolerable stuff involving mushrooms, and can do a rather splendid pasta veggie bake when pushed. Carrots are OK, but anything leafy turns me right off.

Half the veg I eat comes raw, fresh peas (no icy green globules for me, thanks) especially, but I enjoy my meat and use that to give my meals substance.

As for tonight, I think roast duck leg with a red wine and chorizo gravy on a bed of creamy seasoned mash. And chocolate choux buns to follow.
There's nothing I can't do with a few pots and any sort of real food (that is, non-british food of course  )

bit of all those. the main drive behind my vegan-ness is the latter point. if i occasionally weaken its the second part. modern "farming" and food production methods are so inhumane, so awful, that i want as little part of any of it as possible.

and if all else fails, it the health thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow. the quality of what we eat these days if bloody awful as a rule, so i intend to eat the best i possibly can... which usually means stuff not made with pesticides, stuff not intensively farmed and stuff that hasnt involved suffering to the thing i'm eating (its the adrenaline in the system, caused by the knowledge they're about to die, that makes a lot of meat so "tasty").

also, i quite like the notion that after i've done this for long enough, and all that i've eaten before has passed from by body, i will be at a point where there is no trace of any animal products in my system. that feels right to me. it feels "pure", in a buddhist-kinda way

Hell I've just remembered I used to know useuful things like that.

@SG: Should have gone for the Cottage Pie. You're allowed to have ketchup with that. Just out of interest, do you eat this well everyday? If so, I suggest to try beans on toast a few times a week and then you might have enough money left to go places and not have to steal things.

@QB: The few vegetarian meals I have had have been excellent. But I think this was definitely due to the skill of the chef. I imagine being a good cook is a pre-requisite to remaining a vegetarian.
