Francis, what lovely little mound do you show us in your avatar? Is that some sort of landmark from where you are from?

It's Solsbury Hill isn't it? Near Stonehenge. A prehistoric monument.

There's a yardstick against which to measure disgust - is it more likely to make you puke than SS's socks?

I think I can vouch for that.

I climbed up it on the way to Glastunbury in 1994, there was a wonderful crop circle in the fields below.

Not long after I was told in no uncertain terms that you are not allowed to climb it

I wondered about the barbwire at the time. - Ignorance is bliss :innocent:

I hasten to add that I would never do something like that now.

me and my nearly -eight year-old climbed it last year on the way back from the solstice (crusty credentials out for all to see again.ho hum.)of course he chose the steepest route up;and, hating to do the same route down, found an almost impossible rabbit path that we had to come down, ,mostly on our arses!

and no,yer not supposed to climb it;but who says?the officicial posted reason (english heritage) is 'cause you will damage the monument.bollox.its prehistoric.nearly 4000bc(or thereabouts)built for what -ever reason but built to last.that means that since the time of the pyramids people have been climbing it,to see avebuy, crop circles whatever and i'm fcuked if the mans gonna stop me now.interfering nanny-state may say"ooh,it's a bit slippy and therefore dangerous but when i was there a small group of pensioners were coming down and it was them who showed us the best place to get over the barbed-wire!

Sorry, I wasn't ignoring you. I've been a bit distracted of late. As pointed out by the hippiest of our members, it's Silbury Hill. Despite many attempts at excavation to discover what it was built for, they still don't have a clue. I come from Marlborough, which is nearby. It's a very nice, safe and extremely boring place to grow up. That's why they built large mounds and scattered huge boulders around for a bit of fun. More recently, they took to creating crop circles.
