Just finished Game of Thrones first chapter, to campare it to the TV series, and i must admit it's very well made.

If you read all the first book you will notice the "Butterfly" effect GRRM mentioned. Because series writers left some things or changed some from the first book, things start to happen a lot more different in the current tv programm than in the books
