Only the first Robocop...the others were awful.

I'm never quite sure if Total Recall should be included, as most of the action takes place on Mars, but I think it just qualifies because of the general themes. Pity the ending's a bit naff though.

Conquest of space is also a cyberpunk topic. The new frontier, the new Eden... One only the rich can afford, of course, while the poor keeps rotting and dying.
But deep space is not cyberpunk. Cyberpunk always remains close to our reality in order to better criticize it.

I've never been a Shadowrun fan, simply because it's still too close to conventional RPG IMO (not to mention D&D). You don't need to tell me I'm biased, I know that. Cyberpunk is the best, but unfortunately the game system is really dated, and very rigid. I do hope the new version is up to the task.

I didn't even bother with the TV shows. As soon as the social satire and politics are removed, there's no point IMHO.

Shadowrun's a great system. We just got rid of the D&D side, shoved the magic into the Matrix (except for the physical adpets, who became martial arts experts) and left it at that. Haven't bothered much with the 3rd edition onwards though. I'll let you know about the new Cyberpunk 2030 when I get it, unless you beat me to it.

It clearly lacks the "punk" element in my opinion. Where are the drugs ? The corruption ? The music ? The violence ? The mohawks ?

Or, I see myself as someone who likes a lot of Goth stuff but I’m not the a typical Goth as I’m not restricted to only Gothic music or clothing. I like to think of myself as someone who likes a very wide musical spectrum.
Same goes for clothing, its true I mostly ware black and I like leather and Victorian, industrial, punk, …. Cloths.

That is one thing that is good about the current "Goth"scene,it is very eclectic in both music and style.In recent years it has seemed to assume a great deal of,that which used to be termed,alternative culture.Where else but a goth night can you hear music that has elements of Punk,techno,industrial,rock and even(god help us)heavy metal?

the term Goth is these days just a name for all kinds of alternative dark music.
Electro, Bathcave, Gothrock, EBM, futurepop, all kinds of folk music .. and you can problably make that list longer and longer depending where you like to go out. and who stands behind the turntable becaus it are still them who define the name isn't it.

That's exactly the point. Cyberpunk is in its very essence a political genre, a depiction of grim days to come. Cyberpunk authors are visionaries (or at least very clever social critics).
Don't forget that most cyberpunk literature was written in the 80s.

Nothing Philip K. Dick had envisioned, which is quite scary when you think about it.
The Matrix offers a more graphic rendition of cyberpunk, but the mere idea of a matrix was there from the beginning.

Dick was a real master of conceptual sci-fi; his material is being (and will continue to be) fleshed out with all of the gory tech details for a long time to come.

I think The Sisters/cyberpunk parallels are about looking at 'the world as is', as Von says. Elements of the imagined future of cyberpunk are (often sadly) the new reality.

What did Von say in an interview once? 'Gloomy' is a 'housewives term', I think. It's realism, or the refusal to deny the real world.

So, um, the world sucks, I do agree, but in between living and dying, there are very good rock songs to be made and heard.
