in an attempt to pretend they are dealing with national alcoholism the cunting govt have finally managed to make a minimum price for alc.per unit tarif into law. that means the £2 cider i buy from tescos will more than double to a fiver. yet another tax on the fucking poor. the moderately well-off will hardly feel the increase, the pubs wont even be affected (theoretically). and where's this extra money going? not to the brewers as it was the scottish distillery's who have fought the law for years. so into the coffers of HM. let's hope it makes a dent in the money needed to treat the many people with cirrhosis who wont have been stopped from drinking.

Mini pibs latest performance (the fifth in three weeks) took place in the passenger seat of my car in rush hour traffic. Nothing I could do but watch until I could park up.

Never gets any easier, I get used to it, but this was horrible.

This isn't anything dreadful it is just something that pissed me off.

I have a CD player / recorder. It has two CD slots so you can play on one whilst you record on the other. I have had it some time and thought I would look round on the interweb to see what was available as a Christmas treat. I thought there would many to choose from with lots of extra features all at rock bottom prices - the market would be awash.

This is not the case. They seem to be something of a rarity / novelty now and are going the same way as the 8-track or the laser disc.

This doesn't seem right that such a useful piece of kit no longer has a market. Don't kids today have CDs?

Kids nowadays use spotify, tidal, itunes and so, they, mostly have no CD at all. Everything rented.

and everyone has a computer, which is without doubt the most efficient way of copying cd's. doing it on the fly leaves you open to all sorts of variables which can mean all you have is an expensive coaster factory.

I have my whole CD collection ripped in iTunes nowadays, and on a 128 GB USB stick

With my CD recorder I am assured of a direct copy

If I copy on to the computer and then back on to CD or even worse on to a USB stick do I not lose quality?

Surely it makes sense to have the best quality? Or am I missing something?

I take the point about the Coasters - it certainly isn't a 100% hit rate

When you are working in 16 bit WAV you have the exact same quality as the CD which is also 16 bit audio.
MP3 is always lossy but most peple won't hear the difference between the cd and a 256k MP3. It sounda all very technical, but ripping a cd to these two quite standard settings will leave you with a good copy, and instead of 2000 cheap blank copied cd's you have a device that's a few inches big and quite compatible with almost everything nowadays.

Nope, you shouldn't lose any quality at all. You should end up with a bit perfect copy. Trouble with CD players is that they do a certain amount of interpolating & making their own decision what to play to you, so you'll be getting a next generation copy (with your old recorder) of what the player wants to play.
Copying the files to a HDD does away with whatever quirks a stand alone player might have.
That would certainly give you the best chance pf preserving CD quality audio.
Iz mentions high bitrate mp3s which are all well & good for portability & convenience, but if you want to retain a faithful copy of the original, bang that disc in your pooter, drag the audio files to your HDD & choose your preferred media from there.

This cat has been with me for almost 15 years. When I was working on my dissertation, she (adorably and annoyingly) interfered by sticking her head into every book I was reading. Honestly, I don't know if I could have finished it without her. We will have to put her to sleep soon, and this too is breaking my heart.

The (not really plus, but we'll call it that) plus side is that she is unbelievably happy. I'm hoping she makes it a few more months, though I am not optimistic.

well i will keep my fingers crossed for you both. cats are remarkably resilient creatures and certainly more than a little full of the "life force" of the universe. she may well surprise you . love and peace.
