had a listen to my Canadian lp early this morn - Marian is 5.35, and it ain't at all different from the normal original lp; FALAA is 3.50, and has the reverse drum intro. Dunno where the idea came from that Marian 2 mins shorter than normal cos it isn't!Red_Kola wrote:Nice find...
And what the hell is the Canadian only mix of Marian???

Well I plan to purchase the F&L&A vinyl and copy it to a CD when my mate brings his laptop over.
Am I right in thinking that the 1988 CD is a mixture of the original vinyl AND the Jap versions? And then the 1992 version is a remastering of the 1988 version?
It was definitely reissued in 1990 (if you believe Amazon) but I have no idea what's on that!
I think it's safe enough to say that the original European 1985 LP and cassette are the only way to be sure of getting the correct mixes, otherwise you could literally end up with a mixture of anything.
The master tapes were allegedly "lost" sometime before 1988 (as has been mentioned somewhere up above, I think), but the appearance of the original NTTC on ASCOOB kinda makes that seem doubtful and dubious. It was, after all, part of the LP sessions and not a separate recording.

If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

As has been theorised elsewhere I think, Walk Away and NTTC would also have been mastered for their respective single releases and presumably these could have been used for ASCOOB instead of the missing LP tapes...mh wrote:The master tapes were allegedly "lost" sometime before 1988 (as has been mentioned somewhere up above, I think), but the appearance of the original NTTC on ASCOOB kinda makes that seem doubtful and dubious. I couldn't tell the difference between the original CD and the remastered one. At the time, they were played through the TV via the DVD player when I listened to them. I have the original 1985 album on cassette although anything out of Warners on prerecorded cassette in the 1980's sounded awful compared with the likes of CBS/Epic.
If anyone is interested in owning the 1992 Remastered CD, I have two new & unplayed copies available for sale of trade. The joys of a closing down sale! Private messages please if anyone wan'ts a copy. I might list on ebay or amazon market place at the end of the week.

There ain't really much. It's the original vinyl you want to hear, now that is a very different beast indeed.RetroGoth wrote:I couldn't tell the difference between the original CD and the remastered one.

I downloaded from somewhere the vinyl versions a while back, they are superior, no question about that. I tried to get rid of the record player noise, scratching and all that but without much luck. It sounded more like cotton wool in the ears with some nasty ear drops. Ah well.mh wrote:There ain't really much. So was that short, Canadian version of Marian exist or was it an error? If it does exist, can it find it's way to cyberspace for one and all...

How sad is that
It was Warners alright. They felt that it wouldn't go down well in WHSmiths and the like, and the band couldn't have been bothered arguing. It's listed as "Amphetamine Logic" on Wake.

Please someone, make the orginal vinylversion available for download. I have it on tape but I´m no longer a owner of a tapemachine.

I'd really love to, cos I have in my mitts a top-notch recording, but is it legal?John Blond wrote:Please someone, make the orginal vinylversion available for download. Forgive me if this is a duplicate thread (or whatever the correct term is) but there is mention of the original recordings of First And Last And Always being "lost". With the term "lost" being in inverted commas, was the loss of the original recordings something other than a simple "I can't remember where I put them" sort of thing.

Who cares? There's no legal way of buying the original vinyl mixes with any proceeds going to the band.mh wrote:I'd really love to, cos I have in my mitts a top-notch recording, but is it legal?John Blond wrote:Please someone, make the orginal vinylversion available for download. I know. Silly really, isn't it? "You can't actually purchase these recordings and give the band any profit. You can purchase the recording from a second-hand dealer who would get all the profit. But you can't receive free mp3s of them with nobody getting any profits, oh dear me no."

At the end of the day, copyright laws are really picky and you can't really tell if you're breaking the law or not. Now, I know things like p2p sharing is illegal. But then there are things like, you are (for example) allowed to tape a CD to listen to it in your car, but if you then lend the tape to a friend and they copy it, then it's illegal
It is illegal to buy a DVD, and then stick it on a big projector screen in your garden for everyone to watch whilst you're having a BBQ.
In my opinion, if someone has purchased a cd or a dvd or anything like that, then it is their property and they can do whatever they want with it.

Well, I got to page 2 and skipped a while. So I'm sorry if I missed something.
My cd makes no mention of being a remaster. Catalogue no. : 240 616 - 2.
I also have the vinyl, which sounds the same to me...EXCEPT FALAA itself, where the drums a quite lot more kicking.
So, is my cd the real deal?

If it looks like this then you have the 1988 version
Nope, backups for personal use are perfectly acceptable, no matter what FUD the RIAA/MPAA try to feed you.Dark wrote:Actually, I think it's *technically* illegal to make a tape copy of a recording to listen to in the car. But nobody will ever prosecute for THAT.

1) No silence between Black Planet and Walk Away
2) "Reverse drum" intro to FALAA
3) The arrangement of NTTC is the same as on ASCOOB - in particular, listen out for the outro.
If all these 3 match, chances are that you have the original mixes, although if memory serves, they were never released on CD.
