Saw Prometheus yesterday. I don't get why people are so down on it; I thought it cleverly tied into some of the threads from Alien without being too obvious about it.

Oh yeah. Definitely go for the 3D. The 3D effects blew me away.

Although to be honest, the last time I saw anything 3D was with those crappy red-green glasses that are never quite the right colour and give you a raging headache after about three minutes.

The new 3D glasses make you look like you're at a Blues Brothers fan convention!

I'm wondering wether to start watching a Game of Thrones..people rave about it, but I'm not really into High Fantasy and what I've seen makes it look like Warhammer with tits. I'd be expecting someone to mention "Hit Points" any minute. Would it be worth my time? I'm told the books aren't that well written.

This might convince me to watch though..

I just finished reading the series on the insistance of my Mr. I have to say the books are well written, HOWEVER he has a style that takes a while to get used to - oh and they are LONG! The TV show is good, worth watching, although I like the opening sequence more than the show - season 1 is bang in line with the books, then it starts to diverge...

Anyway I am currently watching the entire River Cottage back catalogue and loving it!

I've only seen the first episode of Game of Thrones. It struck me as a bit like a soft-porn version of The Lord of the Rings.

So yeah, like you say, Warhammer with tits.

I also tried reading the first book, and got bored about a quarter of the way through.

I did watch Game of Thrones. Was pretty much what I expected, but lots of surprisingly attractive cast members, so watched up until pretty blonde Viserys got killed via molten gold.
I am the kiss of death to any character in a tv series. All I have to do is say "Oh, I like this guy/girl.." and death ensues. Prince Alfonso of Naples, Queen Sophie Anne, Viserys..

I loved the first hour but there were a series some moments that required such a huge leap I ended watching the ending with gritted teeth.

Fassbender is superb. Again.

True Blood Series Five is absolutely and completely f**king awful. I cannot recommend you avoid it enough. The only plus point is Russell Edgington. Someone will one day edit me a dvd with just his scenes on. Possibly the day after someone finally edits Alexei Sayle's unfunny flabby backside out of my Young Ones DVD's..

I don't know that I'd go that far, but yeah, it was a bit dull. Even though we watched it only a few weeks ago, I am hard-pressed to recall much of anything.

I just binged my way through the first four seasons of Breaking Bad. I thought it was simply amazing.

but i can't deny there is a certain charm to the way of life here, and the scenery is stunning.

there's a lot of rich right-wing gun freaks, drop-out surf bums (with rich right-wing gun freak parents) and fake-chested blonde women (usually married to rich right-wing gun freaks & step-moms to the surf bums), but so far i've managed to not let them spoil the experience for me

been here two and a half weeks, got another week and a half left.

I did a fellowship in your (current and temporary) neck of the woods a few years ago. It was really nice. So nice I felt guilty about being paid to be there and study. It took me a while to get used to the marine layer. What really took me a while to get used to, though, was the (for lack of a better word) opulent way of life. It seemed positively decadent to me. I was there for two weeks; I'd say it took me about a week, minimum, to get used to the luxuries that were present. Very strange, at least to a guy like me (my last full-time job before academia was construction. I'm not still sure construction wasn't better. And I'm originally from NY, which just makes it all... very confusing).

It's actually quite good. It's a very clever show about the ugliness of politics. "Warhammer with tits" is doing it a disservice. It's smarter than that. With tits. Lots of tits. I've never read the books.

Yeah, nowhere near enough sex in season 5. IMO it's running the risk of disappearing under the weight of too many "supers". When it was just vampires and Sookie's mind-reading it wasn't too confusing, but now we've added shape-changers, were-wolves, were-panthers, faeries, brujos, mediums, psychics, and now an ifrit. Too much.

Lots of confusing about True Blood! Why is Bon Temps a run-down redneck white trash dump when in the books it's a poor but decent Southern town? Why is book-Sookie plus size, intelligent and likable but TB Sookie a shrill dumb pain in the arse?
I agree about excessive beasties. But at least the faeries are pretty! I don't know why they've all got clipped English accents though..

1. A sizable portion of rural Louisiana looks like that, actually.
2. Casting decisions are often not made with accuracy to the source material in mind.
3. Because for Americans faeries are all English.
