On The Wire/Teachers

Now the ground comes up too fast
Too fast to meet you
In clouds of dust erupting
Thick around your feet, be careful
In the rubble in waiting
Wall to wall where you tread
Now the quick and the dead and the same old
Fates come calling cards away
How do you think it came to pass you
By the hard way by desire
How do you think it came to pass you by?
On the wire

I don't sleep so I don't dream
So I don't wake up frightened
Everything is what it seems if
You look deep enough tonight and
See

A met a woman long ago
Her hair the black the black can go
Are you the teacher of the heart?
Soft she whispered, no

I met a girl across the sea,
Her hair the gold that gold could be.
Are you the teacher of the heart?
Yes, but not for thee.

Some girls wander by mistake
Into the mess that scalpels make.
Are you the teachers of my heart
We teach old hearts to break.

On the wire
On the wire
On the wire
I will not fall

On the wire
On the wire
On the wire
I will not fall

On the wire
On the wire
On the wire
I will not!

Obviously we can't decipher a meaning from this cause it's just a medley, I wonder how Andy picks his medleys..?

Not to forget it was a medley with Adrenochrome instead of OTW before.

Teachers is just one of the most perfect lyrics ever written IMHO :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

I was handsome, I was strong,
I knew the words to every song,
Did my singing please you?
No, the words you sang were wrong...

A fine example for any songwriter to follow :notworthy:

listening to a recent boot (forget which one) he switched the black to white:

Her hair the white the white can go

i think he's trying to hard ;)

I think I've heard that too, even the black the white can go IIRC (or the other way round)

You must give a man his due : Leonard Cohen is a first class lyricist. :notworthy: And a great person too.

It's just a shame that some of his more recent (80s) stuff sucks musicwise. Far too much shiny production, slimy synths and embarassing background vocals.

In the case at hand, the fact that you can read Teachers on so many levels doesn't make things any easier. Try to understand :von: 's lyrics, then try to understand how He understands Cohen's lyrics.

Then get something for that terrible headache you've just got yourself.

You guys know that Cohen also has a song called Suzanne (this one with a "z") ?

@ Obviousman: actually, now i think about it, it could well have been "the black that white can go", or vice versa :!:

By the way, I had forgotten that Cohen also had songs called Birds on the wire and So long, Marianne. Now do you believe in coincidences ?

Not a coincidence by any means. He also has a song called "Sisters Of Mercy", and is referred to many times on the Sisters' website.

I didn't mention it because I thought it was common knowledge, but of course...
