we've already had the revamps of "seventeen seconds", "pornography" and "faith" -anything else is pop music IMO.

You forgot Three imaginary boys.
What's wrong with pop music ? (that being said, I can do without The head... and Kiss me)

3 imaginary boys et al., though fine tunes in my book, sound a little dated and definable to a specific time.this IMO means that they are "pop".

the mighty *ahem*goth trilogy of seventeen seconds pornography and faith are timeless, being definable to a style rather than a period. (you really do bite don't you?  )

The head and Kiss sound sooooooo 80s it makes me mad. They have their moments though. Along with Mixed up and Wild mood swings these are the only albums I don't like. Not bad. The top is brilliant but weird.

I do bite. We're here to talk. Let's talk. Can't say no to a good old fashioned argument. 8)

And waddaya mean by goth anyway ? ;D

if you don't think they're first generation goth then i don't know what is.
musically that is.
putting your lippy on badly and being dragged through a hedge backwards has been around for years.

They were part of a scene for sure. But goth has never been the most appropriate term anyway. Neither are cold wave or dark wave according to some. I myself stopped worrying about labels long ago.
I guess it's okay as long as you keep in mind that "first generation goths" were punk offsprings first and foremost.

But then what's punk ? Image

cold wave? dark wave? they aren't the correct label 'cause no-one called it that then. i was too young to be a punk-rocker: the label for us and the music at the time was goth(s)...unfortunate but true.

Circa 80 they got called the "Pink Floyd of the new wave". Labelling is a press thing anyway. Most bands don't care. Only those who need to find a niche for commercial purpose seem to worry about it. Cheap German "goth" bands for instance. :innocent:

true, but if you started calling punk-rock "anti-glam" or "shock 'n' roll" no-one would know what you were on about.

I remember Chicago rock journalist Lester Bangs following The Clash on the road in 77/78 (of course I wasn't there, I read the book :innocent: ). He had no idea why people in the UK were so crazy about punk rock. He'd been listening to and writing about punk rock since 1966 !
I agree with your comment, of course.

Somebody remind me what singles came from Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Pornography was a very good album.

17 seconds is the 2nd best album ever made, after FALAA.

closely followed by all joy division's albums, all 3 chameleons albums, the cure's pornography, floodland, and the eponymously titled "nancy & lee"

the remaster of pornography is very nice indeed. far better than the soupy original.

head on the door is perfect pop. which is A Good Thing. and don't let anyone ever tell you any different.

it's Kiss Me (x3) i can do without most of. still, a few good songs on there.

aye, i've become quite a fan of "the top" these days too, after not really liking it when i first heard it years ago :|

i have a love/hate thing with "kiss me". "catch" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, performed and sung. and "how beautiful you are" is also rather smashing... but there's alot of filler towards the end of the album where my attention wanders :|

woudl love to hear a remastred kiss me though - i think its little soupy in its original format - the production varies wildly from song to song and to me it just doesnt sound consistent as an album :(

A Forest / Another Journey By train
17 seconds : A forest/Another...
They made a video for Play for today even though it wasn't a single

Faith : Primary/Descent
Other voices : video, no single

The "Charlotte sometimes/Splintered in her head" single was released in late 81, between Faith and Pornography

So far bonus tracks have all been smashing. Let's hope they keep it that way.

It's way too long (72') and sounds like a compilation album more than anything else. Still some people like that variety. Not me. As for fillers : 1000 hours, One more time, The perfect girl... Not to mention Hey you which is not on the CD version (thank god) :urff:
Fight : great music, but the lyrics are beyond despair.

EDIT : Three posts in a row is enough, isn't it ? ;D

Disintegration is so good it's almost scary. Even though it doesn't have 17 seconds' charming innocence.
Bloodflowers is a lesson in songwriting.

BTW I'm looking forward to the Glove reissue. Wonder what the b-tracks will be : '83 The Cure live tracks ? Robert sung versions ? (drools)
