.. one of them is male. what is the probability the other is male?

according to some 1/3

oh, and

http://thedogdaily.com/goingplatinum/food_fun/facts/

"Male dogs do not actually need to lift their leg to urinate. A male dog urinates with one leg up to better mark his territory. This scent can tell another dog many things, including the size of the dog that did the marking. The size is judged by the height of the mark, and dogs like to make themselves seem as big as possible by lifting their leg so they can make a higher mark."

and

"Using their swiveling ears like radar dishes, experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second."

so presumably they can hear the next sisters album already then?

 ;)

Given :von:'s penchant in the mid-90s for shirts in colours that could only be seen by bees, an ultra-sonic album (with run off strip reading "For Spiggy", perhaps) is the next logical step...

Bummer for Daschunds.

a man makes a serious mathematic proposition, what are the chances of it still being on track after 5 posts in HL

the naming convention doesn't count in this case QB. Nice try though :notworthy:

as there are only two sexes (not including neuters) the obvious answer is 1/2.
what's the clever answer then Ez?

Why would some say that it's 1/3? ???

Four possibilities for two dogs:

Code: Select all

_ Dog A _|_ Dog B _
=========|=========
1 Male | Male
2 Female | Male
3 Male | Female
4 Female | Female
It can't be possibility 4, so there are three left; of those, two have the other dog as female, so one chance in three that the other is male.

Having said that, Lee is right. The gender of one dog does not affect the gender of the other. The scenario described is a misunderstanding of statistics.

To further derail, my dog smells awful, yet it has got a nose. What gives?

Regarding PiBs teaser, the other dog / bitch is a female in season, hence the presence of the male dog.

My previous post doesn't quite make sense I think. But it sort-of explains how you could falsely come up with 1/3.
paint it black wrote:.. one of them is male.
Call the dog that we know is male "dog A". there is 1/2 chance that "dog B" is also male. (line 1 and line 3 above)
Alternatively:
Call the dog that we know is male "dog B". there is 1/2 chance that "dog A" is also male. (line 1 and line 2 above)
paint it black wrote:what is the probability the other is male?

according to some 1/3
You should therefore count line 1 twice.

God, I know the answer, but trying to explain why it's the answer is tougher than it seems.

Yet I too possess a nose. So if it was me...what gives?

option A can only be male or female, therefore 1/2

option B, equally valid, discount female female, therefore is 1/3

motz might help with his avatar

My dog's got no nose.
Your dog's got no nose? How does he smell?
Like Daniella Westbrook.

We can ignore the dog that we already know is male.

A man has a dog of non-specified gender. What is the chance of it being male?

Obviously 0.5
paint it black wrote:option B, equally valid, discount female female, therefore is 1/3
That option is just a red herring and not statistically valid.
