Sisters und philosophy

ItnAklipse, Eldritchs court-philosopher, brought this lovely topic up in another thread. To get this straight:
What is the deal regarding Sisters and philosophy?
Is that a common thought in here, that sisters has some special philosophical relevance?
That you have to be reeaally intelligent to "get" the sisters? (I think one might need a sense of humour ..)
Or is it the opaqueness of His lyrics? Or the nods and name-droppings on the web-page etc?
For all I know E. is a doctor in philosophy and all, and Im not interested in philosophy, just wondered
Ok, submit your thesis..
cheers

I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying he's got a PhD in philosophy, which doesn't make him any less intelligent. Technically, he's not even a graduate student anyway. His songs have meaning and relevance, and that's what matters.
And take my word for that, a PhD is not always a proof of intelligence.

PhD is completely irrelevant to philosophy. Actually it's repelling, take my word for it. And without deep philosophical understanding you are missing also the humour part of the Sisters, replacing it with your vulgar sense of what is commonly mistaken for humour.
PS: Once again, in the light of previous experiences, i hope it's needless to mention that i shall not be taking further part in this discussion. Help yourself, please.

Please don't let them get you down.
As for PhD being/not being a proof of intelligence, I'm not far removed from completing mine, so I guess I quite know what I'm talking about. It's a proof of ability in your field, no more.

The "deal" is that Andy has read some books without pictures; doing so has informed his writing. As for "getting" the Sisters, it probably does help to be a bit on the smarter side of things (otherwise, one might think lines like "I've bled all I can I won't bleed no more" have something to do with pointy-teeth and bad fake accents, or that "Marian" is about suicide), and a sense of humour helps as well. After all, the band isn't comprised of post-operative brain donors...unlike, say, Motley Crue. There is depth, and one can try to penetrate that depth. The fact that most people
don't bother might have something to do with the lack of interest in putting out a record. Why put out a disc of well-thought-out material that's held close to the heart when people are going to think it's the return of the King of the Bats? Why put out work that you've sweated blood over (ohhh...her we go with the vampires again) when you know it's going to be misinterpreted as some sort of moronic lifestyle statement? Frankly, I wouldn't put out a record either, were I in his shoes.

Yes, but I'd venture to guess that the vast majority of the lovely folks here at Heartland *
do* bother. We're the choir, see...

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to analyze
or over analyze.
The slings and arrows and lyrics
of outrageous Eldritch.
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
critiques, know-it-alls
And by opposing end them?"

Oh, go on. The chance of a war on the Greek Peninsula caused by feuding Sisters followers would look great in history books. Their philosophy (if any) would then be a PHD subject.

having already experienced your views on certain things, your hatred of "americans" (on Dominion) and your insult to the entire Greek nation on the other thread I, (personally) think it is for the best if you just Shut The Fukk Up for awhile.
You have managed over the past few weeks, indeed the length of this Sisters tour, to come across as one of the most bigoted, ignorant, and offensive people I have ever had the misfortune to come across.
Your cod philosaphy is laughable, you superioraty complex is deeply worrying and your generalisations about HUGE groups of people is genuinly disgusting.
If anyone here thinks I may be being a tad harsh - I point you to the Dominion mailing list, where I and many others have been subjected to an anti american tirade of the highest order recently, for me this is is no different to calling someone a paki, or a [whoops, i did a racism], the post about Greece in the other thread, for me was the final straw.
Mods where are you? I know that the Silver Bullet threads can be a bit of a chore but for fukks sake, this was disgusting reading.
To defend your obsessive view of the Sisters as untouchable you have resorted to racism, hatred and gobbledegook.
I hate no group of people I hate no race, but I hate you because you are a c**t.

And without deep, philosophical understanding, some people forget that their opinions are merely *opinions*, commonly (and often, quite vulgarly) mistaking them for fact.

The bane of all great rock'n'roll bands such as Motorhead, The Birthday Party and Mayhem: The Great Unwashed buying their albums and not getting it. Maybe less interesting tunes help scaring away people who believe "Slept" is about sleeping with a lot of girls, for instance.

Surely the majority of people like the loud tunes and big guitars, the leather and shades? I bet the majority of any audience are more into the choruses than the hidden underlying meanings and that's way more people than the ones who got their Beginners Guide To Philosophy from old Von interviews..

What's wrong with sleeping with a lot of girls ?
Be careful not to get too clever.

Ok, interesting replies..
I certainly didn't mean degrees in ph= proof of intelligence.(And I'm not anti-academic etc, just experienced how some people get very full of themselves.)
There's obviously more to Sisters than say, eh Bon Jovi, but to state that "deep philosophical knowledge" is neccesary to "get" it, is way over the top I think..
I can't see that Sisters are anymore special in this way than most (GREAT) bands, one could interpret all of them on different layers. Sisters probably attract lots of people who are on the bit searching side of things though.
Thanks for confirming your view ItnAklipse ,maybe it's mostly your language I react to, vulgar in the true sense.
(Of course I'm not a native English speaker, but anyway)

That is when you can hear the words. Has anyone actually heard the second half of Crash and Burn sung coherently? Yes, some of the songs have obscure subtexts, but some are just plain banal ("You could be the One").

What are you talking about? "You Could Be the One" is the most brilliant deconstruction of the Foucauldian power/knowledge dynamic ever written--and it's in rhyme and meter no less! Banal my ass....

There's nothing wrong with a party song here and there.
There are very good party songs, just as there are lots of (very) bad supposedly "deep" songs.
That's about as far as my philosophy goes.

The more I look into a song/poem/text, the less I enjoy it.
This is not usually appreciated in my English Lit class, when somehow the rest of the class can accept a poem about a blind woman darning, called "The Great Goddess", as referring to the Creation, and I ask "Is it not possible that it's just about a blind woman darning, with a "poetic" name to pretend it has depth?"

You Sick Assassin of Culture.
WHERE DO YOU GET OFF!
I remember the first time I had that revelation.
I believe that was one of those times when I was told that art was subjective.
