The other week I had to reinstall Windows. Luckily a mate of mine let me use his harddrive to store my files whilst my PC was being reset.

Today I reinstalled Itunes and had to add all of my music back onto it but now when I go to edit the info of a song all of the fields (artist, song, etc.) are all greyed out.

What's going on?!

Seems they've turned into read only files? Just see at the files' properties in Windows explorer. IIRC You can select them all and then undo that. Archived files could have the same problem I think...

iTunes IS a problem.

I also asked on the ilounge site and got the same reply (about them being read-only).

So unticked the read-only box but I still can't edit them.

You probably have to re-edit that all into it as well - unless you saved the actual iTunes files folder from your previous harddrive.

do you have to re-authorize your iTunes? (are they purchased songs?)

or maybe you have to fix your account permissions on the folder(s) they are in - WinXP has account permissions like OS X, right?

No songs aren't purchased from Itunes.

Something did popup about "permissions," what did you mean by WinXP account permissions?

once you've changed the file permissions, you may well have to re-import the folder in itunes so it picks up the new files

this works for the windows version of itunes...

1) zap the old folder:
itunes --> highlight all your artists --> hit delete --> choose "remove" --> choose "keep files"

2) close itunes

3) update the permissions on the music folder
windows explorer --> navigate to your mp3 folder --> right-click on the music folder and choose PROPERTIES.

on the GENERAL tab, look at the bottom section - "attributes"

untick the READ ONLY and ARCHIVE options and hit OK. if it asks about nested files & folders, also choose to update the permissions on all the files and folders inside that main one...

4) re-open itunes

5) re-import the folder:
itunes --> file --> add folder to library --> and select the folder with your tunes in again

that should re-index the entire thing, and pick up the updated permissions

well i fixed the problem

but now i have a new problem!

when i import tracks to my itunes library (either by importing from cd, or by click file>add file/folder) i have problems.

say for example I'm importing from a CD.

all the songs will import fine but when it gets to the last second of importing the last track on the cd, itunes crashes.

WHAT THE f**k IS GOING ON!
